A PETRIFIED FOREST
Almost everyone has heard of the petrified forest in Arizona, but few know that it is comparatively easy of access to visitors.
The distance from the railroad is but seven miles and at the station Adamana, on the Santa Fe, a few miles east of Holbrook, Mr. Albert Stevenson maintains a small inn, accommodating about ten men and provides a spring foraging and several saddle ponies whose desire to visit the forest.
The old pioneer, Adam Hanna, who, in the sense that John Hance made the Grand Canyon, made the Petrified Forest, has moved away.
At the forest there are hundreds of sections of tree trunks of various sizes and in variegated colors lying exposed on the plain or half buried in the hillside. There are several extinct species, and about two miles from the railway station are the ruins of an old Aztec settlement, and curious hieroglyphics carved on rock.
Stopovers are granted at Adamana on through railroad and Pullman tickets where the holders desire to visit the Petrified Forest.

Early History of Rivers.
The first rivers mentioned in authentic history are alluded to in Genesis. They are the Pison, the Ghon, the Hiddekel and the Euphrates, which are said to have flowed from the Garden of Eden. Various attempts have been made to identify these streams, but no agreement has been reached among the authorities, save in the case of the last.

Mark Twain is very much more wary about giving out interviews than he was several years ago, and to a reporter who asked him about a certain incident in his own life recently, he replied that he wanted to use that material himself. He is at work now at his house in Riverdale on his autobiography, and he said that he did not propose to give away his material—New York Sun.

BRIDGE THE ST. LAWRENCE
Bridge And Terminals Estimated to
Cost $10,000,000.
TOTAL LENGTH 8,800 FEET.
New York, Feb. 8.—Negotiations have almost been completed in this city and in Canada for the construction of a bridge across St. Lawrence river at Montreal, which is to be one of the largest of its class in the world. The bridge to be constructed is the Royal Albert bridge, from Montreal to Longueuil, and the Montreal Bridge Company has entered into a contract with the Atlas Construction Company to erect it.
The construction company plans to begin work on the bridge as soon as aid already pledged by the province of Quebec and the city of Montreal becomes available. The estimate cost of the bridge with its terminals is $10,000,000.
The total length of the bridge is to be 8,800 feet. The main span, the cantilever, which will be the largest of its kind in the continent, will be 1,260 feet long. The height of the bridge above water will be 150 feet and its width eighty-three feet, providing for a double track steam railway and two sidewalks. The weight of steel in the structure will be about 74,000,000 pounds and there will be 90,000 cubic yards of masonry. Thirteen different lines of railway will have access to the bridge.
Fatal Sewer Explosion.
Chicago, Feb. 8.—Thirteen lives were lost, many persons slightly injured, two buildings were wrecked and $50,000 damage done by an explosion of gas at the intersection of Twenty-second street and Archer avenue. It will be difficult to ascertain whether illuminating gas exploded or whether the mains were broken by an explosion of sewer gas. There was a glare of fire from man holes far along the streets.
Echoes of the Storms.
Madrid, Feb. 8.—The authorities of many Spanish towns are assisting those who suffered in the recent storms with provisions. The snow storms in Spain continue.
Rains and snow in Portugal have caused inundations. There have been several wrecks on the coast, and some loss of life. There is much misery at Oporto as a result of the snow.
Judge Hurford After Help
Washington, D. C., Feb. 8.—The house committee on judiciary gave a hearing to Judge Burford on his bill providing for additional associate justices of the supreme court of Oklahoma Territory. The judge made a very strong presentation of the case, setting forth the necessity for an increase in the judiciary and also urged that the salaries of the judges be increased.
Jamaica has Prosperous Year.
Kingston, Jamaica, Feb. 8.—At the opening of the colonial legislature here, the governor of Jamaica, Sir Agustus Hemming, announced for the first time in many years a slight surplus in the transactions of the year. Manila Cigars by the Million.
San Francisco, Feb. 3. -Private advices from Manila state that there are over two million cigars on the way from the Philippines to this country. It is thought that by the middle of March, at the latest, there will be ten times that number consigned to America. Of the shipment now coming, 600, 000 alone are for one firm in this city.
Grand Secretary Kent Found.
Topela, Feb. 8.—D. W. Kent, grand secretary of the Kansas grand lodge of Odd Fellows, who defaulted last year for about $9,000 and disappeared, has been located in Costa Rico. There is no extradition treaty with that republic. He is stranded there and is prospecting in the mines.
His brother in Illinois owed him $1,000 on purchase of horses from him and this amount has been secured. Kent was bonded in a security company for $3,000, payment of which is refused, and suit will be brought for the full amount.

Ogdensburg, N. Y., Feb. 8. -Gold has been discovered on the rocky farm of J. L. Hockens, of Depcyster. The discovery has been kept secret awaiting an expert assayer, whose report places the ore at a value of $75 per ton. Mr. Hockens has taken out a ton and a half of gold bearing quartz. The vein was found near the surface and runs into the side of the hill. Expert miners say the find is a valuable one. Preparations are being made for extensive mining operations in the spring.
Native Governors Elected:
Manila, Feb. 6.—The returns so far received indicate the election in most cases of native governors of provinces. Captain Harry B. Bandholz of the second infantry, defeated Major Cornelius Gardner of the thirteenth infantry, the present governor of Tayabas province. The military men declare that accepting elective office will necessitate resignation from the army. At Balanga (capital of Bataan) there are only 84 voters but 80 votes cast and another election
