CAUGHT AT LAST ROBBERS OF UNION, MO., BANK RESTED SUNDAY. TRACKED TO HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT Fierce Fight Occurred When Men Were Cornered — Outlaws Were Fugitives Ever Since December 27, and Had Killed One Detective Sent After Them. HARTFORD, CONN. — (Special.) William Rudolph, known as the "Missouri Kid," and George Collins, were arrested here Sunday by officers of a detective agency and the Hartford police. The men are wanted for a bank robbery at Unlon, Mo., committed December 27. The safe and vault were blown open and while one of the burglars secured the money, the other stood on the street with revolvers and prevented the citizens from interfering. About $14,000 in money and $100,000 in securities were stolen. Private Detective Schumacker of Chicago was killed when he went with three deputy sheriffs to the house of Rudolph's parents. Taking two horses from a farmer at the point of a revolver Collins and Rudolph rope away and got to Hot Springs, Ark., where they made a short stay. Next they worked east and came to Hartford, where Collins formerly lived. They stopped with two of his half brothers, Edward and Theodore LaPlant, and afterward took quarters at 32 Allyn street. Rudolph's parents were arrested. In the search of the Rudolph house a scrap of paper was found upon which was written "George Collins, Hartford, Conn." The Hartford police learned that Collins had formerly been in the reform school at Meriden, Conn. He has two step-bothers there named LaPlant. Rudolph and Collins have been here a few weeks, but were not located until Sunday, when Rudolph was seen on the street. The detective wanted to get the men together and would not risk getting one for fear the other would get a way. Sunday afternoon Rudolph, Collins, and the two step-brokers were seen coming out of a house on Allyn street, where they had two rooms. They were followed to a house on State street and the force of Pinkerton men and local detectives was gathered there. Collins and the La Plants came out of the house together and were arrested without trouble. The "Missouri Kid" remained in the house and Detective Dougherty and Detective Farrell, of this city, went after him. They went into the house with revolvers drawn. Rudolph reached under his overcoat for his gun, a large one. Dougherty was upon him before he could pull it. The men had a struggle. While the Hartford detective tried to get the gun away from Rudolph Dougherty was bitten in the neck. Farrel finally got the gun away from Rudolph, when a man in the house went to Rudolph's assistance, thinking the detectives were trying to hold him up. The woman of the house told the man who the officers were and then he helped them. Rudolph had about $2,300 on him. In the rooms occupied by the men were found three large revolvers, a bag of cartridges and skeleton keys and a quantity of clothing. In all $8,685 was found in the rooms and on the prisoners. About $3,000 was in gold. FOUND DEAD AT NEWPORT. Body of fashionably Dressed Woman Picked Up on Cliffs. NEWPORT, R. I.—(Special.) The body of an unknown woman was found on Newport's famous cliffs Saturday opposite the estate of Mrs. T. Shaw Safe. Nothing is known of her identity except that her name is Barker and that she came to Newport about fifteen months ago. She was always fashionably dressed, but has never let a word pass to disclose her identity o where she came from. A week ago the woman disappeared from her boarding house, and the police were notified but could not find her. Saturday afternoon a colored boy, while walking along the cliffs saw the body lying on the rocks above high water mark and notified the police. The local examiner is of the opinior that the woman became temporarily demented and becoming unconscious died of exposure. Beside her was found a bible, a volume of Scott's Ivanhoe a purse containing a small sum of money, and two Pullman car tickets one for passage from Chicago to Niagara Falls. Dutch Women May Vote THE HAGUE.—(Special.) The Democratic liberal party introduced in the states general Wednesday a bill to amend the constitution of the Netherlands so as to extend suffrage to all men and women over 21 years old, with the exception of lunatics. The bill also provides that the electorate shall be the same for both chambers. Wife Converted. Row Ensues KOKOMO, IND—(Special.) Friday night in the revival at Young American Baptist church Mrs. William Depaver joined. This enraged her husband who raised a row, breaking the chandelier and one window. Elias Plank, his wife's brother, interposed and there was a fight. Depaven went home and locked his wife out. Saturday Depaven and Plank met and the fight was renewed. At the close Depaven was unconscious and covered with blood. He is still unconscious and it is thought will not recover. Clerks on a Strike. VANCOUVER, B. C.—(Special.) The clerks employed in the freight, passenger and telegraph departments of the Canadian Pacific railway went on strike Saturday to enforce recognition of the United Brotherhood of Railway Employees. A freight clerk, alleged to have been discharged because of his membership in the brotherhood, was made the subject of an ultimatum. He has been a practicing attorney in Topeka since 1889. Through hard work honest and diligent application to his profession he has acquired a good practice and gained an enviable reputation for thoroughness and integrity. We believe he has possessed the qualifications of a good judge. His past has not been all sunshine and ease, but quite the contrary. Mr. Slater's early life was spent on the farm, first on the pioneer front of western Iowa and later in that of western Kansas. His advent into Kansas was in the spring of 1879, driving a bunch, of cattle behind praise schooner which was occupied by his mother and sister. His father having gone on before to take a claim. Owing to the failure of crops during the next few years he left the farm to work. He labored for nearly two years PETER H. BURKE FREDC, SLATER in various capacities on the D & R. G. railroad in Colorado, and has some experience in many kinds of rail-road labor from section "tody" to that of locomotive fireman. Later he worked in a flouring mill, in a grain elevator with harvesting and threshing cutfits, etc. Finally in 1883, while working at Junction City, Kansas, and stopping at the boarding house of an old lady, the widow of a lawyer, this widow took much interest in him, persuaded him to improve his education and prepare for a profession. Mr. Slater langhed at the idea, but upon being offered an opportunity to work about the house morning and nigt for his board, he concluded to attend school for a few winter months while work was scasse, but by the end of these few months he had gor in earnest and continued the pursuit of his education, carrying one-half course of study at a time. Then he took up the study of law until he came to Topeka, where he was admitted to bar so after. "Having been a wage earner my self in almost all kinds of com mon labor known to this western countroy, I-can truthfully say that labor, like everything else, must look to its own interest and to its own rights' if it would obtain its rights.
