There was one probative clue—the sleeves were neatly pressed. Mrs. Gaunt lay on the floor without stirring, and when at length she moved, unobtrusively, careful lest she attract the menace to her, she opened her eyes, and with crushing alarm darkening their depths, stole a surreptitious glance at the open window. Suddenly she uttered a sigh of relief. . . The groping red hands had vanished! But that was the way of the phantom. He never perpetrated serious harm. He merely showed his squirming fingers, then crept noiselessly away. Mrs. Gaunt did not make a great disturbance over what had occurred. The double barreled shotgun that her husband had placed in the corner against the fireplace had been forgotten. Like m Terror Failed To Reckon With This Colored Boy the majority of women in the county, she had been expecting a visit from the phantom; yet when he paid her the visit, she had found herself absolutely incapable of grappling with the situation. She had lived in dread of this visit for so long that her nerves were completely exhausted. For several weeks every woman in Nodaway county had lived in perpetual dread of the phantom. He had terrorized and made his escape without leaving any workable clues. They did not know whether he was a mad man who would perpetrate a fiendish crime when the notion struck him, or whether he was a halfwit, a peeping tom or what. So there was a reason for Mrs. Gaunt's helpless nervousness. The county is one of the largest in the state, consequently the phantom had plenty of territory to terrorize. He never crossed the county line in any direction. He was quite active at the county seat, appearing in the immediate vicinity of the old Hepley home—one of the landmarks of the town—with persistent regularity. Some people believed he was a business man who had become insane; some thought him a college student; some, a tramp; while a few were of the opinion that the phantom was a decidedly pretty young woman who had made a wager that she could twist the tail of the law and evade its kicking feet. No woman ventured out on the street after dark. Husbands preferred to remain at home to protect their loved ones. School girls were kept in; hence the movie shows suffered. There was no end of the hardships caused by the phantom. No remedy was effective. A business executive for a firm at the county seat had the habit of repairing to his office every evening where alone he entertained himself by playing solitaire, sometimes remaining there until a late hour. TRUMBULL (Specially prepared for the Illustrated Feature Section.) FOR a long time, I had wanted to know more about Beatrice Morrow Cannady, or as she is listed in the telephone book Mrs. E. D Cannady. She is the woman who leads her race in Oregon; the person to whom we turn for things political, social and industrial, which concerns the colored people. I had listened with intense interest to her broad-minded views on the subject of race relations and had sympathized with her efforts to break down the barriers of prejudice and discrimination which my race has maintained against hers. Many times I envied her the poise, the patience, the fine spirit of tolerance which was evident throughout the story of her people. She dropped into the office one afternoon and we chatted for a while of clothes and children, her own in particular, two splendid chaps, 13 and 16 years of age. Then I asked a few questions about herself and this interview began. It started out with my question as to how long she had been in public life. "Always," she said with a smile, "ever since I was a tiny child and was stood up on the platform to sing, 'Hello, Central, Give Me Heaven for My Mama's There,' and then I would promptly begin to cry as I could not bear the thought of my precious mother being so far away. I was a tiny thing and it seemed to afford a lot of amusement for the audience, but to me I lived through what I sang. I was always singing." "You were born in the South, Mrs. Cannady?" "Yes, in Littig, Texas. Our family name is Morrow. My uncle is still postmaster there and has held the office through all sorts of administrations for over forty years. "After graduating, I taught in the Gilbert Academy, in Evangeline's country, where one breathes all the significance of Longfellow's wonderful poem. Later I taught in Logan County High School, Guthrie, Oklahoma." "Was it in the South that you studied music?" "No, I studied voice with D. A. Clippinger, Kimball Hall, Chicago. I had great ambitions in those days and dreamed of an operatic career. While in Chicago, I also attended classes at the University of Chicago. But now I am so busy with my home, my boys, the paper and the other work that I have no time for the study of music. I can only listen to other people sing and play." Mrs. Cannady takes great pride in the fact that she presented Roland Hayes to Portland audiences twice before he became world-famous and she predicted then that he would reach his present height. A One parent hit upon the idea of renovating a little-used basement room, which is on the level of the street, as a play room for his four youngsters, and their friends. There is only enough furniture in it to allow for needed rest—a few chairs. There is space for the smaller ones to romp and even ride about. Near a window is a work-bench for the older boy who is a radio fan. The rest of the equipment is left to the children to devise as they wish. They find boxes, pieces of carpet, pictures, table-cloths, and other things for playing house. And, the more they are left to their own choosing, the fonder they are of their play room. They like a place of their own where there are no "don'ts" in the air to cramp their freedom. They like a place where they can be hospitable to their friends in their special way without supervision. It is a happy trait in healthy, normal youngsters that they also like to have their parents visit them at their play. When a parent is truly welcome, it is proof that the parent is a success in this role. He must first establish this cordial relationship of good comradeship in order that all his other efforts will bear the fruit for which he works. Then can he attain his goal—guidance toward full development and growth. Visiting the play room in the spirit of play, the mother or father has created ideal conditions for real study of the child. Then, by inviting or rather encouraging the children to invite outside children in to play the mother can watch the budding social tendencies of the youngsters. Generosity or selfishness, good-sportsmanship or caddishness, leadership or backwardness etc., all make their appearance as pupil reacts upon pupil. The situation is complicated by the fact that the husband has an orthodox southern viewpoint concerning Negroes. Moreover, Clare's white husband calls her "Nig" because as she grows older she becomes darker. The unsuspecting husband explains to Clare's "near white" friends that as long as he is assured that Clare is not colored he might even call her "nigger." It is apparent that he regards the nickname as having no significance other than a humorous one. Irene Redfield might also "pass"; but she chooses not to, and makes an interesting comparison with Clare. Irene is the unwilling confidant of Clare who seeks her companionship in order to escape the tenseness of her racial camouflage. Clare's husband finally discovers that her blood is not really "blue" but black. The discovery is made in circumstances which result in Clare's death.
