T. Burrell, within less than sixty days' time, 59 new members were initiated into the mysteries of Oddfellowship to help keep alive the principles of FRIENDSHIP, LOVE AND TRUTH. Burrell called up on some of the old veterans of the order to tell of the early days, each told of the trying times, and rough sailing and they were loud in their praise of, and readily contributed, the success and growth of the lodge to Bros. G. of Arnett Lodge, a member of its degree team and one of the trustees of its Investment League. He is popular, unassuming, pointed and positive, few yew men in the lodge have in so short a time attained his position. He is an honored-Mason and brave Pythian. For more than ten years he has been employed in the General Offices of the Illinois Central Railroad and enjoys the full confidence of his employees. The Blade is delighted to present to its thousands of readers the likeness of one who by his own effort has risen from an humble country lad to leader in the business, professional and financial world in a metropolitan city. Oglethorpe County, Point Peter, Ga., is where this young man first saw the light of day, May 27, 1887. He attended the Georgia Normal and Industrial Institute, Greensboro, Ga., and Knox Institute, Athens, Ga. After graduating he studied pharmacy in the Government Laboratory at Washington, D. C., and spent more than five years in the chemical laboratory of Scars and Roebucks, Chicago. Seeing the need of such work among his people and being ambitious, he en- P. N. F. JOS. HENDERSON. Arnett, Lodge, G. O. of O. F. Chicago, III. It is with pardonable pride that we present to our thousands of readers the likeness of one of the most promising young Oddfellows in the windy city. He first saw the light of day in Atlanta, Ga., and is well known in and around the 4th ward and "Dark Town." Coming to Chicago more than 12 years ago, he has made good, and is now a shining light in Oddfellown fraternity. He is a member of the degree team and a trustee of the Instruction League Club. A brave knight, being a member of Primrose lodge 247. Mr. Henderson has made many warm friends not only in his Lodge circle, but of the citizenry of Chicago. He is indeed a broad hearted Oddfellown. PREACHERS CARD GAME. Rev. Coozie Britton of Palmyra, Mo., Prin. Douglas High School, Higginsville, has invented the game that is the need of the age. Educational playing cards. These cards are great entertainers. Eight different games are played with this deck. The players are given a poetic vision, a patriotic soul, and inspired by poetry, proverbs, questions of importance, advice, history, spelling, arithmetic and the election of presidents of various political parties. Watch the papers. Read the Wisconsin Blade. MR. C. J. SYKES, MILWAUKEE, WIS. DEAD. Representative Citizen, Church Officer and Business Man. All that was mortal of Mr. C. J. Sykes was laid to rest in Union cementary on the 26th of Dec., 1919. His death was a sudden shock to his many friends. He was confined to his bed less than a week. Funeral services were held from the St. Mark A. M. E. Church of which he was a consistent member and a dutiful officer. He had connected himself with all movements tending to the elevation of his race in the cream city. Revs. J. S. Woods, E. J. Morley, S. S. Russel, C. T. Threat, E. W. Thomas and W. S. Ferguson were in attendance of the sad rites and spoke in the highest terms of this faithful Christian and progressive citizen. The floral tributes were many and beautiful which bespeak the high esteem in which he was held by his fellow citizens. The palearbears were Attorney Geo H. DeReef, B. C. Kemp, Tony Burgett tered the field of pharmacy for him- self. How well he has succeeded is best proven by his splendid business at 4118 State St., Chicago, Ill. He does a mail order business of more than five thousand dollars a year, giving employment to several of our race. He is a member of the Baptist Church and active in the civic and political life in the windy city. The records show that he has aided more men in securing positions than any man in Chicago. In the financial world he is rated A No. 1. His real estate holdings places him on easy street. Dr. Huff, it is reported, will be in the race for Assemblyman from his district in the forthcoming election. He is worthy to be emulated. Jno. Austin and Stephen. Dr. T. A. Boger read the biography of his life. The Blade joins the host of friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved family. Undertaker D. W. Raynor was in charge of the funeral, which was conducted in a first class up-to-date manner. Mr. John Geter departed this life Saturday last and was buried from D. W. Raynor's undertakers parlor. WET FIGHT ON NEW ANGLE Wisconsin Brewers to Protest the Legality of Court's Definition of Criminal Conduct Milwaukee, Jan. 6—Coincident with the ruling of the United States Supreme court declaring constitutional parts of the Volstead prohibition enforcement act dealing with a definition of what constitutes intoxicating liquor under wartime prohibition, Wisconsin brewing interests announced that they would contest the legality of the same act's definition of intoxicating liquor under prohibition by constitutional amendment. The test case will be brought within a few days, according to William H. Austin, counsel for Milwaukee brewers. The validity of the Volstead act in so far as it concerns wartime prohibition will not be questioned, however. ASKS RECOGNITION OF IRISH Sherwood of Ohio Urges Congress to Act Favorably on Mason Reso- tion Washington, Jan. 6. -Consideration of Ireland's struggle for autonomy and independence was urged in the house by Representative Sherwood, Democrat, of Ohio, who spoke in support of the Mason resolution now before the foreign relations committee, which proposes to recognize a de facto government in Ireland. Backus sentenced two Chicago gunmen and robbers to a term of thirty years at the state prison, Waupun, The men were charged and pleaded guilty to two assaults with intent to murder and rob. That the men happen to be of the same race as ourselves, in no wise arouses our sympathies; they are robbers, a menace to the community, in no sense representative of their race. And all beeause “Clay Truner, handsome Negro, half white, a chauffeur in Madison, his home, six or eight years ago, is posturing as an Indian in Detroit, and winning laurels as a pugilist. The Detroit Fere Press says of him, that he ‘is an Indian, tough as leather, and with his natural assets for a ring career, knows how to box. His success in gaining a verdict over the flashy Hebrew ina battle at Boston attests to the red man’s qualifications to step along with the fastest company in the light heavyweight circle’.” What fools some mortals bet They give a fellow hell merely because he is a Negro, and then work themselves into a fit if he beats them at their own unholy game. Geneva, Switzerland, Jan. 6.—A tribute to Field Marshal Von Kluck, commander of the right wing of the German army in its advance on Paris in 1914, has been paid by Marshal Joffre, chief of the French armies in the first titanic struggle of the war, who is visiting the little town of Alge, just west of St. Maurice. "Masterly tactics in the retreat from the Marne, while they did not stem the tide of defeat, saved the German right wing from complete disaster," he said. "The enemy was able to retire with only small losses and it was Von Kluck who prevented an overwhelming catastrophe."
