ARNETT LODGE, 7455, CHICAGO GOES OVER THE TOP
Special to the Blade.)
Chicago, Ill.-At a recent meeting of Arnett Lodge, and at the request of the N. G. I. T. Burrell, within less than sixty days' time, 59 new members were initiated into the mysteries of Oddfellowship to help keep alive the principles of FRIENDSHIP, LOVE AND TRUTH.
During the evening the popular N. G. I. T. Burrell called up on some of the old veterans of the order to tell of the early days, each told of the trying times, and rough sailing and they were loud in their praise of, and readily contributed, the success and growth of the lodge to Bros. Chas, Griffin, I. T. Burrell, Arthur Perkins, and R. W. Wells. It is true the Bro. Murray and others whose names the writer fails to get were equally as active and ren-

THE MAN WHO DARES.
"I honor the man who in the conscientious discharge of his duty dares to stand alone; the world, with ignorant, intolerant judgment, may condemn, the countenances of relatives may be averted, and the hearts of friends grow cold, but the sense of duty done shall be sweeter than the applause of the world, the countenances of relatives or the hearts of friends."—Charles Summer.

The Blade is delighted to present to its thousands of readers the likeness of one who by his own effort has risen from an humble country lad to leader in the business, professional and financial world in a metropolitan city.
Oglethorpe County, Point Peter, Ga., is where this young man first saw the light of day, May 27, 1887. He attended the Georgia Normal and Industrial Institute, Greensboro, Ga., and Knox Institute, Athens, Ga. After graduating he studied pharmacy in the Government Laboratory at Washington, D. C., and spent more than five years in the chemical laboratory of Scars and Roebucks, Chicago.
Seeing the need of such work among his people and being ambitious, he en-

It is with pardonable pride that we present to our thousands of readers the likeness of one of the most promising young Oddfellows in the windy city. He first saw the light of day in Atlanta, Ga., and is well known in and around the 4th ward and "Dark Town." Coming to Chicago more than 12 years ago, he has made good, and is now a shining light in Oddfellown fraternity. He is a member of the degree team and a trustee of the Instruction League Club. A brave knight, being a member of Primrose lodge 247. Mr. Henderson has made many warm friends not only in his Lodge circle, but of the citizenry of Chicago. He is indeed a broad hearted Oddfellown.

Wisconsin Brewers to Protest the Legality of Court's Definition of Criminal Conduct
Milwaukee, Jan. 6—Coincident with the ruling of the United States Supreme court declaring constitutional parts of the Volstead prohibition enforcement act dealing with a definition of what constitutes intoxicating liquor under wartime prohibition, Wisconsin brewing interests announced that they would contest the legality of the same act's definition of intoxicating liquor under prohibition by constitutional amendment.
The test case will be brought within a few days, according to William H. Austin, counsel for Milwaukee brewers. The validity of the Volstead act in so far as it concerns wartime prohibition will not be questioned, however.

A PRAYER.
Alone upon a hill I stand,
Overlooking No Man's Land
In night's black skies, like Northern lights,
Pale flashes rise to mark the heights,
Where death’s dark angel bears away,
‘The souls of men who have died today.
Jesus of Nazareth, from thy eros
Look down and confort those who toss,
And seream with pain and anguish dread,
In No Man’s Land among, the dead;
Have pity for the wounds they bear,
Jesus of Nazareth, hear my prayer,
On Calvary as the hours dragged,
From large, eruel nails thy body sagged;
Yet in such agony, Oh Lord,
Thou did sive bleed comfort toward,
One suflering soul, who with Thee died,
He, who for sin, was erucified,
Out here die men who die for right,
Jesus, be mereiful tonight;
Wilt thou who stills the troubled seas,
Stretch forth thy hand their pain to ease?
For many mother's son,
Whose fect have so nobly trod,
Barth's battlefield for humanity,
Oh! Son af God.

Long immunity from punishment for mob violence
against colored men soon begets a contempt for law in
dealing with whites,
According to newspaper reports, the persons who broke
into I. W. W. quarters on Martin St. and destroyed litera-
ture found there, first visited the chief of police and ad-
vised him of their purpose. No policeman was around. If
true, 'tis a verious charge against the department. Either
the I. W. W. is unlawful and should be legally suppressed,
on else it is lawful and should be protected in its rights.
Irresponsible persons should not be permitted to exercise
‘the functions of lawfully constituted authorities, We ean-
not believe the story.
In the Municipal Court, Milwaukee, recently Judge A. C.
Backus sentenced two Chicago gunmen and robbers to a
term of thirty years at the state prison, Waupun, The
men were charged and pleaded guilty to two assaults with
intent to murder and rob.
No good citizen will take exceptions to this scntenee.
Having satisfied himself of their guilt, the judge didewell:
to give them the full penalty of the law. That the men
happen to be of the same race as ourselves, in no wise
arouses our sympathies; they are robbers, a menace to the
community, in no sense representative of their race. So-
ciety ix always safest with such men behind the bars for
a Tong term.
PEEVED.
-The Marison Democrat is peeved, “all het up,” and does
not care who knows it. And all beeause “Clay Truner,
handsome Negro, half white, a chauffeur in Madison, his
home, six or eight years ago, is posturing as an Indian in
Detroit, and winning laurels as a pugilist. The Detroit
Fere Press says of him, that he ‘is an Indian, tough as
leather, and with his natural assets for a ring career, knows
how to box. His success in gaining a verdict over the
flashy Hebrew ina battle at Boston attests to the red man’s
qualifications to step along with the fastest company in the
light heavyweight circle’.”
What fools some mortals bet They give a fellow hell
merely because he is a Negro, and then work themselves
into a fit if he beats them at their own unholy game. This
“handsome Negro,” though “half white,” is not the first
to “flee the wrath to come” by his wit. ‘The woods are
full of others who suecessfully get by as Indians, Spaniards,
French and even plain “white trash.” So long as the Negro
remains tinpopular and a premium is placedon being some-
thiner else, the more venturesome will eros the “great
livide,” in. spite of the watehful eyes of Madison Demo-
rats, As an Indian, Turner enjoys many advantages he
would be denied as a Negro. He may even aspire to be
hampion pugilist of the world—a privilege now denied to
every Negro. So let him go to it, we'll say.

JOFFRE PAYS FOE TRIBUTE
French Field Marshal Says Von Kluck's Marine Retreat Saved German Wing.
Geneva, Switzerland, Jan. 6.—A tribute to Field Marshal Von Kluck, commander of the right wing of the German army in its advance on Paris in 1914, has been paid by Marshal Joffre, chief of the French armies in the first titanic struggle of the war, who is visiting the little town of Alge, just west of St. Maurice. "Masterly tactics in the retreat from the Marne, while they did not stem the tide of defeat, saved the German right wing from complete disaster," he said. "The enemy was able to retire with only small losses and it was Von Kluck who prevented an overwhelming catastrophe." While he strongly condemned the German soldiers for their conduct during the war, Marshal Joffre stated he admired their bravery.

London's Rapid Growth
Paris was the largest city in the world for several hundred years until about the end of the seventeenth century, when London overtook it. The population in Paris in 1680 was 500,000, while London had reached 530,000, the latter figure showing the rapid growth of trade and commerce during the Tudor period.

Kept Ignominy in Memory.
On the 5th of November, in 1506, Christopher Columbus, in spite of the incumulative services he had rendered to Spain, was taken into Cadiz in fetters. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella were moved at the sight and commanded that he be released. Columbus, however, was unable to forgive the insult, and until the time of his death the ignominious fetters were hung in full sight on his walls as a reminder of the ingratitude of his sore ereigns.
Keep Accounts.
Farming is a business the same as banking or running a mercantile establishment. There are products to be sold and articles to be bought. The keeping of a record of these and determining the relation of the outgo to the income are important considerations on every farm. The farmer should know what his income is and just how he is disposing of it. He can know this only by keeping books and the first of the new year is the proper time to begin—Exchange.
Lion Had Long Life
Authorities differ as to the age limit of a lion. Some biologists fix the normal span of a lion's life at about twenty-two years. A lion which died in the Tower of London in 1750 had lived in captivity over 70 years.
