BARBAOUS TREATMENT TOWARD BABY. Thrown Back Into Flames After Having Escaped. East St. Louis, Ill., Oct 22.—Testimony that during the race riots here July 2 a mob of fiends threw a colored child into a burning house after it had escaped from the flames, was given at the Congressional inquiry today by Edwin Popkess, a reporter for a St. Louis (Mo.) newspaper. He also said he saw our or five National Guardsmen shoot and kill two colored men who ran from a burning house. Paul Y. Anderson, a newspaper reporter, testified that before Federal Judge Landis ordered a reformation last November many saloons in the city were conducted in a disorderly manner and were the eminent breeding places of crime, and he believed it was the same element haunting these resorts that took part in the race riots. The law as element had been so powerful for years that political parties played for its support, Anderson said. John W. Paton, general manager of the Morris & Co. packing plant, where many colored people were employed, was asked by Rep. Baker why he had not gotten fifty rides and stood between the mob and men and women they were murdering. He replied, "Well, to tell you the truth, we were afraid for our lives." Old Man's Home Saved By Injunction. Fraud Charged. An injunction just issued by the Riverside County Court will prevent the foreclosure of a trust deed on the old home place of Crafford Carter, an aged colored man of Perris, Riverside county. Attorney Afe McDowell of Los Angeles, representing Carter, returned last week from a three days' trip to Riverside and Perris, where he had gone to look after the old man's interests. According to the complaint which Attorney McDowell filed in the Riverside County Court, the case seems to be another instance of where an aged Negro, being unable to read or write, had placed all of his confidence and business with an influential grocer. The complaint alleges that while Carter was mentally incompetent to transact business, the grocer forced Carter to sign a deed of trust on his home. Now the grocer is endeavoring to foreclose the trust deed. Carter has many friends in Riverside county and Los Angeles and resided in Southern California for more than 25 years. A conservative estimate by persons who are qualified to judge large bodies of people, is that there were 10,000 colored people at the depot on last Sunday evening to bid farewell to the dratted men, and seeing this mighty gathering, on this patriotic occasion, causes one to think of the great responsibilities in store for them should they combine their efforts for real progress along the various lines of endeavor. The need of a sound and healthy Negro Press was never more apparent than at this time. The scant mention of the notable gathering on last Sunday in the daily papers shows that it is not their mission to exploit the things worth while which are accomplished by the people and if it is heralded to the world we must do it ourselves; therefore it's clearly up to this same people to build up their very own press if they expect the exploitation of the things worth while. And, just think! no mention whatever was made in the daily, press of the wonderful occasion at the Eighth and Towne street church on Oct. 24. So, in actions, not in words, they say to us. "You must tread the wine press alone!" The question which now confronts us is: "Are we equal to the occasion?" Thomas F. Ryan, the multimillionaire, who married just twelve days after the demise of his wife, evidently thought that the deceased was just as dead as she ever would be. The question of "Wet or Dry," like Banquo's Ghost, will not down and the people of the city will be called to render their verdict on Nov. 20 as to what Los Angeles thinks about this issue. We regret very much that some of our young men who are aspiring to do the things worth while fail at the outset to set a premium on honesty. And when they fail to do this they will, without question, fail long before reaching their goal. You cannot make good army officers, doctors, lawyers, or anything else, if you are dishonest.
