To increase France's crops and lighten the burden of toil on her old

ship 1,500 farm tractors to that country in time for the spring plowing.
The tractors are expected to be not only of immense service to France
by making it possible to raise more food on ther land,-but also through
this very fact that they will enable the French to produce more food
for their own consumption, and thus lessen the demands for food from
America, they will release shipping for the transportation of American
soldiers. ~, j

"The Young People's Missionary Society met at the home of Mr. Henry Jones on Sunday afternoon, last, with new outfits presiding. A splendid program was rendered, after which dignity refreshed were served. Great things are going to be accomplished by this N. P. M. S. during the ensuing year. Through the superintendency of Mrs. Bass, and on account of the interest she has manifested in the progress of this society, each member seems to have taken on new life, and are striving to do their "bit" towards making this coming term one of progress and advancement. At the last meeting Mrs. Bass expressed a hope that the R. P. M. S. would, on some evening in the week, have a social gathering which she declares will develop the right kind of association between the members, and will help them to know each other better.
On the strength of this hope Mrs. Nettie Johnson of 1109 Clanton street has extended an invitation to the Y. P. M. S. to meet at her home on their first social evening.

January, 14, 1918.
The frigid weather which is now covering the United States along the Atlantic Coast and the Middle West is not only the paramount complaint of the California boys of our hospital unit, but is of the people of these sections who are undergoing it, and extreme weather is being greatly enlarged upon by the unexpected lack of coal.
I have witnessed many riots where people raid coal cars on side tracks and the poire are powerless to prevent them.
The people of California have no idea or appreciation of the fact that Nature does not deal out similar weather to them.
The boys of California Unit No. 3 are gradually and patiently accustoming themselves to prevailing circumstances though vaccination and inoculation of typhoid serum have caused much complaint among us.
We are grateful to say that we have been often and highly entertained in the City of Brotherly Love (now nicknamed "Sisterly Love") because of their kindness.
I have just returned from a visit at the National Hospital, where I received a hearty greeting from my aunt, Mrs. Mamie Snelson Chapman, and her family and friends.
Washington is the brightest spot of the advancement of our race and is all aglow with the war spirit. "Tis indeed encouraging to see the vast number of women of our race, as well as the other, holding Government positions, and I am, glad to say that my cousin, Miss Mamie C. Cooper, is one of the number. Many of these positions were formerly held by men. These positions number thousands in the Government Printing Bldd., the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, etc., and the holders of these situations come from all parts of the U. S. The salaries range from $2.00 to $3.00 daily, and many of those at work are students of both the colored and the white universities and are still attending school between times. So many girls have positions that the boys have decided to "let the women do the work."
On my visit to Howard University I was heartily welcomed by Dean Kelly Miller, Prof. Tunnell and Mrs. Mary Church Terrill, all frirnds of my par-parents—and I also received much good cheer from the students in honor to my uniform.

THE CALIFORNIA EAGLE
SAN DIEGO
BY MRS. C. E. NORWOOD
The San Diego Division of the California Eagle is being handled by Mrs. C. E. Norwood and funder her efficient management we are expecting big things from that end of the wire.
The California Eagle has a very large circulation in San Diego, which was the work of Mr. M. T. Laws, who very satisfactorily managed the Eagle at San Diego for about two years, and gave it up reluctantly on account of press work in his own line as city employee.
Mrs. Norwood is one of our best prepared young women in San Diego, and the management of the California Eagle considers itself complimented in securing her service at this time, and is ask that the good citizens of San Diego give her their unpaid support.
Sunday, January 20th, it was my good fortune to meet and address the San Diego Women's Council.
Mrs. Ella Hutson is president of the Council and a live wire. Mrs. C. E. Norwood, recording secretary; Mrs. P. E. Shepherd, financial secretary; Mrs. R. C. Plenty, vice-president; Mrs. Fowler, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Jones, treasurer in looking for exact details from this organization for I was impressed not only with the officers, but likewise with the membership.
During my four days' stay at San Diego I was royally entertained at the beautiful little home of Mrs. E. E. Shepherd, and on the evening of January 21st, was tendered a reception at the beautiful residence of Mrs. M. A. Gooden, of 3030 Franklin, where I met the California Governor. The others in attendance at this reception were] Mrs. E. E. Shepherd, Mr. and Mrs. Charles (Dodge), Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Plenty, Mrs. H. Saunders, Mrs. Precilla Fowler, Mrs. Ella Hutson and Mrs. Lee Grace.
SAN DIEGO NEWS
Visitors coming to San Diego from other places go away saying that San Diego is dead for the whist of business men and women; that there is no businesses of any kind going on in this town, but by a close observation I am sure they are wrong. The fact is that our business men and women do not and are really in business, but they are in business. California Eagle, a paper that everybody reads, even if they have to borrow one, they must read the California Eagle. We have in the city of San Diego two well equipped hotels, four or five rooming houses, a furniture store, a second-hand store, five or six hair dressers, one ice cream parlor, a pharmacist, hand-painting establishment, three restaurants, three barbers, two dyeing and cleaning establishments, and one jewelry store. Now, I have not mentioned any name, but I do hope that as you read the Eagle this week and tend what businesses you are in that you will advertise and sell them. I hear the name on being dead on your part for the lack of interest you take in it, but call M 4428, and subscribe for the California Eagle, and have your ad put in at once.
Mrs. P. Fowler will leave on the 16th of February for Seattle, Wash., where she will visit her son, Richard Smith, at Camp Lewis, who will be moved soon to parts unknown, and as she has not seen him for more than twelve years, she is anxious to see him before he makes his departure. She expects to be away three months.
Mrs. Ingram is still on the sick list. Mrs. Lucile Jacks, who was visiting in Los Angeles for three weeks, has returned home. She is now rooming at Mrs. E. E. Shepherd's, 543 Twelth street.
Mrs. S. Molan has been on the sick list, and is at home again now.
Cupid is shooting his darts in San Diego—shooting at hearts that have been shot before, but nevertheless is proving fatal. On the 7th of February the wedding bells is supposed to ring at Mr. Zion. Guess who it is?
Mr. M. G. Rutledge, 543 Twelfth street, was agreeably surprised last Thursday evening by a number of his friends, it being his birthday. Mr Rutledge says this is his first birthday he has ever had, so he must be one year old, and he has not told his correct age yet. Mrs. Edna Bomar of Thirty-fourth street is very ill. Heath's Dixie Chorus sang at Chupla Vista last Sunday night.

The Carnation Club will give a $100 Experience Social at the residence of Mrs P. E. Robbison, corner State and Ash streets, on Tuesday evening, February 5. Mrs P. E. Robbison was our first president, and we are glad to have her with us again. All members and friends are cordially invited.
Mrs L. Carlock left Wednesday for her home in Kansas City, Mo., after spending two months with her daughter, Mrs Nettie Estes.
Mr and Mrs A. Melvin Henry of Los Angeles have rented Mr. Woods' cottage on Thirtieth street, and are compiling making their home here.
Mrs E. J. Marshall, still remains very ill.

"The Langley children are sick with measles.
Those attending night school, taking oral expression, are Mrs E. R. Hudson, Mrs A. Knight and Mrs Hendry.
Although the cost of living seems to be ranging very high, it seems to have no effect on the colored population of San Diego, especially on last Monday evening, when a large representation showed on the Strandi Theater see the play entitled "Old Kentucky."

Commissioner of Public Works of
Santa / Monica, William H. Carter,

the hands of all classes of the people
a strong support for reelection. The

chance, and that is all they ask; he
is broad gained and through their
very own journal, he is asking for
their support on the record which he
has made in that position.

services on last Sunday. Rev. Greggs preached two sermons, explaining the duties of every Christian, his theme being, "The Valley of Dry bones". This sermon is one of the most interesting and uplifting sermons ever discussed by our able pastor. The Christian Endeavor meets every Sunday evening at 6 o'clock and is being enjoyed by all who attend. Come and enjoy it with us. On Thanksgiving Day at 11 a.m. the annual Thanksgiving Services will be held in our own edifice. We have many things to which to be thankful and for that reason every member and friend should attend this service and join with us in giving thanks to Almighty God for leading us safely thus tar. A Turkey dinner will be served in the dining hall and you will certainly miss a treat if you fail to take dinner with us. The public is always invited to worship with us.

We are informed that the recent quiet wedding was premature, owing to the fact that a bet was on between the groom and the bride's brother, which gave the ten dollar to the first to claim his bride. (Both being engaged.) The game was a bit unfair, as the brother had written a letter to a friend in the Bay City informing him that he intended bringing his bride down in December to spend his honeymoon. The news was too good to keep, so "groom" after reading the letter, told his bride and a hurry call was sent in for the brother to be present that very evening, the call was responded to and to his surprise every thing was ready and he lost his "ten."

St Paul's Church Report.
Noble in the history of St Paul's have we witnessed such a high spirit as that which prevailed on Sunday. A vast and ectimastic crowd, among whom were many well stricken in years, others leaning on crutch and canes, still others borne on the arms of friends, filled the pews at the 11 o'clock service to listen to Pastor Holt deliver a special sermon to the "Old Folks."
Preceding this, a general remodeling of the work of the Sunday School was had
Pastor Holt introduced the "Metoks and Gaieda" work, together with a "Bible Training Course"—all of which was grasped by the "Willing Workers" of the Sunday school, which had already evinced a spirit of high ideas.
After laboring throughout the Sunday-school period, Pastor Holt came to his pupit at 11.30, charged with a force that held his audience in the grasp of scriptural and psychological reasoning. He preached from the subject, "Triumphant ending of a life of service." Text, Job, 5:26—"Thou shalt not come to thy grave in a full age like as a shock of corn cometh in in its season."
Shuts and tears told that the Holy Ghost was in the meeting. More than twenty above the age of fifty were present to receive the hospitality of St. Peul's. They were served to a chicken dinner in "old style" by the industrial club. At 6 p.m. the B.Y.P.U. opened as usual, with 64 persons present. Many good things were said on the subject. The captains formed lines and a financial battle ensued, with the following results.
Capt. "C." 49c; Capt. "A." 60c;
Capt. "D." $370; Capt. "B." $502;
total, $9 81. The committee of B
Y P. U will go to the bank with
$59.81 raised, over expenses, within
90 days. Bible reading each week.

Judge Dismisses Mathematician.
"Phenoma" appear in the corporation courts of the city of Dallas, Texas, every few days. This fact was witnessed recently when a colored man, not more than 24 years old, was called before the court on a charge of being drunk. "Guilty or not guilty?" asked the prosecutor. "No, sir I'm not guilty," answered the man. "I was just doing a little calculating when the police came for me," he said.
"You were doing what?" Judge Murphy asked.
"Judge, I sure was calculating," the man answered, "and I can calculate faster than an adding machine."
"What is 9 times 7,812?" Judge Binett asked
"Why, let's see," said the man,
"I have it. It is 70.308."
Other sums were asked him, and
they were answered faster than the
Judge could pencil them out on
paper.

Whether he be preacher, teacher or layman, Rev. S. H. Goodwin preached a very pleasing sermon at night.
The Second Baptist Church has installed an oil burner for the purpose of generating its own gas for heating. The B. Y. P. U. has taken on new life, as proved by the great meeting held on last Sunday evening. Indeed all departments of the church work are alive and running smoothly.
Rev. G. W. Reed has been indoiced for the last five days, but is now recovering.
Booker T. Washington memorial services were held last Wednesday, the 14th at Mercantile Hall. Eulogie on his great life were given by Dr. Horace Porter, Major Ford, Rey. P. W. Cooper, and Rey. G. W Reed, promoter of the meeting." Rey. A. J. Lockart was Master of Cemeteries.
An excellent program of special musical and other selections is being prepared by the Second Baptist Church for the Thanksgiving Services. The Church is endeavoring to make this the most unique and successful service of its kind ever held in Riverside.

Dear Sir:
In behalf of the Colored members of the Legal Profession of Los Angeles, I take this opportunity to publicly thank Dr. Robeson and 'the Editor of the Eagle' for the timely observations that Dr. Robeson published in the last two issues of the California Eagle on the advisability of stamina race support for our Colored Attorneys.
There are an even dozen Colored attorneys in this city and in their number it is possible for members of our race to find any class or kind of legal service to be found among the White members of the Profession. As a whole these Colored members of the Bar rank at least as

The great showing which Jamas B. O'Neil's candidacy for Commission of Finance is a revelation to the people of Santa Monica, and each day new recruits are coming to his support. He is eminently the people's candidate. From all sources he is receiving a strong support and it is freely predicted that Mr. O'Neil will merge a winner.
JAMES B. O'NEIL FOR COMMISSIONER OF FINANCE
WILLIAM H. CARTER FOR COMMISSIONER OF PUBLIC WORKS
For the very important position of Commissioner of Public Works of Santa Monica, William H. Carter, present incumbent has made an enviable record and he will receive at the hands of all classes of the people a strong support for reelection. The colored citizens, under his regime have had due consideration and a chance, and that is all they ask, he is broad ganged and through their very own journal he is asking for their support on the record which he has made in that position.
When in Santa Monica your trip will be incomplete if you fail to visit and partake of the good eats of this up-to-date and high-class cafe.

Such a creditable business among our people should receive their hearty support. Popular prices prevail at this place. Have conducted same for six ears.
It has been sometime since we have reported our doings through these columns, so we take this opportunity to let this public know that we are still very very much alive. All of our services are up to the usual standard. Our pastor is still preaching as usual excellent sermons. Last Sunday he preached from 2 Tim: 15. "Study to show thyself approved unto God a workman that needeth not be ashamed." The subject proved that every man should prepare himself to do service for God,

ON THE KING'S BUSINESS
Great Work Done a Fowler
Dr. C. P. Jones and Rev. W. J. Conniston have been holding a great revival in this city for the past two weeks. This noted preacher of the Gospel and teacher of the World has helped revive 55 hymns soils the way to salvation these last two weeks. Leader has a splendid community of people and a world for Gospel work. The Negroes in this section are nearly all ramblers, they have their own antics and going to church is their sure. The church comes to have been spiritually uplifted and the revival was a success from a point of view. Rev. Conniston's preachers seem to be ministry artists so well. He has secured a splendid group on the entire community.

The members and friends of this cleric are still still over Sims, and we are in the first effort to put withhold the priests of the mass appropriately movement club to raise the number necessary to apply on their indigentness. The exercises in the afternoon were grand enjoyed by all. About a half dozen ministers and brethren from the various churches spoke very encouragingly and enthused the great audience. Prof J. B. Bass, master of ceremonies with his thrilling remarks opened the services. Mr E. Hall with his remarks and gospel songs stirred the people to tears. As a whole it was a great afternoon. We desire to thank all who helped in our way in this our first effort, and especially the pastor and members of 81 and Towne Ave. for opening the doors for one of our captains, which contributed largely to our labour.

PROGRESS
Re. Lewis of this city has established a business Church in Montreal.
Re. Lewis is a young, ambitious minister and the people of Montreal should help their duty in attending his services every Thursday evening at Mr. Barnes.
The concert given by the Sunday School and Young People's League of Bethel Church of Christ, last Sunday, was a splendid success.
The program was one of the finest ever rendered in this city. It was not the benefit of C. M. and -L. College in Mississippi.
WESLEY M. E. CHURCH 8th and San Julian Sts.
Rev. A. P. Shaw, Pastor
Sunday was up to the usual standard at Westley E. Church. At 11 am, the pastor preached a very accessible sermon on "Seeing the invisible." At the evening services the pastor preached the Annual Service to the Brotherhood on "To Haiti That One Cometh." A large number of men together with a life-conservation of women, were present and were thrilled by the message of the preacher. One person was conceived after having come forward to prayer at the morning service. This Sunday promises to be one of our special interest to all persons who worship with us. The pastor will preach, morning and evening. "Morning" subject "Watching With Christ." Evening subject "Self Examination." Commission of all services.
Every member of Wesley is invited to be present at one or both of the services Sunday. Announcement of very great importance to the church will be made at both services. Three hundred communicants are wanted. Sunday. Do not fail to be present. All are welcome.
