Thanks to C. F. Mason, Commercial Superintendent of the Pacific and Southern California Telephone Companies, the widest appeal possible has been made to telephone users south of the Tehachapi and as a result of the appeal sent out with every telephone bill in the south, membership is coming out the various departments. This appeal marked to the 120 telephone users in Los Angeles to send their side of Los Angeles took the turn of a distribution to them. Van Dyke's "Christmas Message to You" What Feel Good? And the crime lies at the door of the southernracker, the low-bred specimen of humanity such as Sparkes the Houston police officer, whose art was the real incipiency of the riot, and whose whole body is not worth as much when it comes to real character and manhood as the least drape of blood from the body of any one of these soldiers. And now people should take heart and they should remember that the darkest on the night is just before the dawn, and as in the Civil War, when the day was dark a shinden dawn came with freedom from slavery, and who knows but in this world's war that a new day the freedom or the country of that pretending which damns a nation, a state, city or community. Let us so hope and continuing as yet loyal to our country, attitud to the utmost that the day of a cogent pastorate at this church and the spiritual care has been his first care. Successful in that he has efficiently qualified as a financier of the first magnitude and has raised the Shr. and Towne church out of the slough of dependency and placed her high and dry as one of the very few great Metropolitan churches which is absolutely free of debt. Too much credit cannot be given him and his faithful and energetic wife for the great and successful effort which they have brought to this historic and leading church of the leading city of the great Pacific Coast. JOHNSON HONORED BY UNIONS Last Wednesday evening the assembly room of Labor Temple was comfortably packed, the occasion being a public reception tendered S. P. Johnson in honor of his election for the eleventh term as general secretary of the Building Laborers Union. The half was beautifully decorated in pink and white curtains and China lilies. I W. Cross A NOBLE OUTCAST The Noble Outcast, a drama—in four acts, was presented last Monday evening at Gamut Auditorium to a fairly crowded house. Those who failed however to see this play missed one of the biggest and best-treats ever given to the Los Angeles public. The play was under the direction of Mrs. W. M. Bowers, who played one of the leading roles. Mr. Bowers as Jerry, the Outcast, brought to light his ability as an amateur actor that no one suspected in him—from the moment he entered the stage, ragged, tattered and torn, he got the attention of his audience. So original was his ready wit and so masterly his tragedy that one would have thought that amateur action was his prologion. Mr. Howard as villain was without a doubt a peer in his role. Miss Alice Green as mother was good. Miss Howard as maid fascinated the audience with her quick action and native grace. Misses Green and Taylor played also their parts in masterly fashion. The Noble Outcast was given under under the anjueses of Pana Bodge K of Ps. It is hoped that the promoter will present it again in the near future. Miss Patton, with her brother Malcolm Colpitt, appears before some of the largest white audiences of this city, but she has never been too busy to serve her own when called upon, and it is because of this big heartedness on the part of this young girl made us teed that our write out of the great Temple of Fame was incomplete until this mention was 1 thrilled his fliers with that ierary eloquence found only among Irish and Neighborsors. Mr. Wilson praised Mr. Johnson's muscled mission, as a labor leader, and spoke touchingly in behalf of the great work to be accomplished by unionized labor. Other speakers were: Hon W O Tyler, Noah D. Thompson, Dr D H D Prowl and Mrs C A B All, all of whom paid glowing tribute to Mr. Johnson and his great work as a union labor advocate. Miss Valena Wood presided of the parlor in pleasing fashion and Mrs Norwood delighted the audience with two soprano solos. In our account of describing the beauty and success of the Temple of Fame, the historic drama presented Dec 4 at the First A M E Church under the direction of Mrs Lilian J Craw, our reporter failed to make special mention of the splendid rendition of Miss Juanita Platton as Dellahh. Miss Patton is one of our most charming sopranos, who upon this occasion received the highest applause and keenest appreciation from the great audience. BEATZ HAS A HEARING We are pleased to note the fact that Beatz, the night watchman who assaulted Welcome Watson, janitor at Hall of Records, was given a hearing last Monday by Supt. Davidson, and his findings will soon be made public. The Eagle, while calling for action in this case, had an abiding faith in the Superintendent of the Engineering Department seeing that justice was done and as that is all we asked, we are still assured that he will render the same. Long since Head Janitor Robinson has assured us that Mr. Davidson could be rilled upon to do the square thing at all times and while we urged action in this case we never despaired that the same would be withheld. What the Churches are Doing PAGE TWU Peoples Independent Church of Christ 18th and Paloma Rev. N. P. Greggs, Pastor Services last Sunday were greatly offspring. Rey Greggs delivered son-in-law sotahios at both morning and evening services. There were two accessions to membership. Christian Lindauer at 6 o'clock was very interesting and inspiring. The ladies paid a prayer meeting at 5 o'clock. A special collection was taken to send Christmas remembrances to sotahios on this church. Anderson, Pastor Two spirited and highly enjoyable services were enjoyed by two splendid congregations on the past Lord's Day. The pastor preached at the morning service and the Spirit was present in the service. The pastor is accompanied by some of the members went to Squita Monica in the afternoon and the pastor preached to a splendid congregation. It was Quarterly Meeting and a large congregation was present. The services were a blessing. The congregation here was filled with a sermon at the evening services by Rev L. G. Robinson. The sermon was full of good things and was very much enjoyed by the congregation. The coming Sunday the officers are having a special collection for the pastor. All members are urged to be present. Dr. Prowd said in part that we had reason to restate or reiterate the church today. We are living in an age, said the speaker, when men are easily carried away by false doctrine. We are following strange gods. The missions of the church is to save men for Christ. Dr. Prowd plog for same Christian living was especially to the young people of the church. Every American, whether black or white, rich or poor, young or old, can do something to help win this war. The only question now is: Are you willing to do what you are asked to do and do it cheerfully, thus proving your true American patriotism? The man who goes into the trenches, who is behind the gun or wields the sword cannot alone subdue Germany; but the woman in the kitchen the man behind the plow, the proprietor of the eating-house, restaurant or hotel must all play well their part. And if they fail it will mean defeat for the army, and the world-wide democracy for which we are contending will fail, and all our civilized world would be thrown into slavery. "I have passed the age limit, so I will not be drafted," and "I am a woman, and women don't go to war," are among the expressions often to be heard. All of these statements may be true, but "YOU CAN DO SOMETHING. Did you buy a liberty bond? If you did, then that was your contribution to your country. Did you sign the pledge card sent out by the United States Food Administration? If you did, then you made another excellent contribution; and that is indeed important and essential to success, because the soldiers of the United States and the Allies must be fed, and you are called upon to help feed them. In the United States we seem to have such an abundance of food that the necessity of economizing has not yet made itself felt as it has in Europe. No man apparently is hungry. If one has the price, one seems to feel easy in the matter of getting enough food. But the necessities for food saving is here, and it is vital. It is absolutely necessary that you follow to the letter and spirit all instructions given you by your State Food Administrator. Some people declare that they are not going to make out the weekly report cards and hand them to their church committees, because it interferes with their eating. Anyone who says this is not a true American citizen. Make a careful study of the foods which we may consume and will feel on without inflicting deprivation upon our soldiers and our Allies. Food will win the war. Do you know that we have been asked to consume certain foods to the limit of our appetites while we are urged in the game breathe to eat less of other foods? Is it clear to you that certain foods may be used to sustain life in comfort and good health here in country, which could not be shipped across the ocean? And are you eating those foods in order to permit the sending of wheat, meat, sugar and fat to Europe. Have you, in fact, kept the pledge you signed? In this country 11,000,000 of our people signed the food pledge, to cooperate with the Food Administration in saving food. If these people keep their practices there will be enough to meet the enormous requirements of hungry Europe. The Negro has made a fine record in signing pledge cards. But signing a pledge is not enough. It is more important to carry out the pledge, because this is more serious and an aid to winning this war, and as a reminder that you plighten your word that it will be done. We should not deceive ourselves by believing that peace is just beyond our horizon. A desire for peace is present in all of us. We should not permit the wish to be father to the thought that we shall have peace until we shall have Win the war and placed democracy on the high pedestal where it will guarantee the rights of all free people. There is a place for you in this war game. Find your place and fill it. The Negro press is doing its part by giving space to the information that is given out from time to time. Read it—then act! Thousands of young men of America will soon be in the trenches fighting for you, and you must not forget them. Give them your prayers, and get behind your government in feeding and caring for them. This war is teaching the people some valuable lessons. Frugality is one of them. Individuals who never before had ten dollars laid up for a rainy day are now saving fifty dollars, bearing interest, through the Liberty Bond will start the saving habit, and the possession of fifty, hundred, or several hundred dollars, will give the individual a new feeling of personal security. Have you contributed to the Red Cross fund? If not, do so at once. Such charity has its own reward. Several contributors to this fund aver that they can trace some good fortune to the fact that they were each month doing something for this great charity. And then it is your bounden duty to voluntarily render aid to the Nation's defenders at the front. Come forward! This is God's war, and it is exercising a chastening influence on all humanity. Do not kick at the high prices of food stuffs and the dangers of the war for your dear ones at the front, they deserve your aid and your encouragement, and maybe your prayers too. It is the boast among the grafting guild of colored gentry in every city that "the white man is easily fooled." You can always tell the "gentry" by his first little spiel—it is to to knock! knock! his betters. He is here in his proper element, his listener being misled, losing support. Roberts ```markdown ``` THE CALIFORNIA EAGLE NOTABLE VICTORY FOR JUSTICE AND FAIR PLAY—COUN- CIL BACKS CIVIL SERVICE Monday the Public Safety Commission of the City Council settled for all time the policy of "jim-crowing" the colored citizens in the Fire Department of the city, by declaring that hereafter there would be no separate list kept of Colored Eligibles, and the forty-five colored men, now upon the Eligible List for that Department would be distributed to the various Fire Houses, in line with their rating, as vacancies occur. The California Eagle has stood out body against the request of barefoot and irresponsible leadership which had been very officious in insisting "in and out of school" that the colored people of this city, the people who believe and stand upon their rights as American citizens were not allowed to attend school. In editorials again and again the Eagle has shown the Mayor and City Council that the colored citizens as a whole were as much opposed to separate public institutions as they were opposed to separate public schools, and they have listened and have taken note. And we wish to state right here that the colored people in this city are not at all represented by "jim-crow leaders," and those who come to you as envoys for such are simply representing themselves. We say to the sell-styled leaders you can fool the "white folks" sometime. Let you cannot do it all the time, and let this fiasco of yours in addition to a large number of others long since forgotten by a long-suffering public, be a warning that the thoughtful members of the race have one newspaper and one organization that are pledged to fight every effort to "jim-crow" its as a race. In this connection we now have a military branch of the All American League and are endeavoring to have a battalion. The originators of the All American League had no personal, political, nor ulterior purpose in organizing the League. It any credit comes to them in meeting and overcoming opposition, it should be because they were the first of the race in all this broad country to have advanced "the best way" to fight race prejudice in our citizenship. This has been recognized not only by the President of the United States, the Governor of the State and the Mayor of this City, and more recently by the City Council in doing away with "jim-crowism" in our fire department, but by citizens of Chicago who are preparing to institute the All American Conclave of Illinois, and more notably the National Association for Protection to COLORED PEOPLE, who quite recently adopted a resolution of light the hyphen and terms indicating a separate people looking to separate treatment as citizens. The All American League makes for an orthodox Americanism neither. Africanized nor Caucasianized. In other words it makes for what is of concern to one American is of concern to all. That is the kind of patriotism the All American League now of the Nation stands The Haitians fought the French institution of human slavery under the flag of France; exalted themselves in battle with the National air. "La Marsellaise"—and won. They appealed to their fellow-countrymen who were tast mastering the principles of democracy. The All American League is fighting race prejudice as the right of American citizens, not as a privilege of the afflicted. It recognizes no truely democracy where a man is known by the color of his skin, his race or antecedents; and that is where you as a race come in. We cannot hope to accomplish anything worth while if we ask for discrimination for some questionable advantage, and any man or body of men who go before the City Council asking for separate fire houses as the only way to "provide jobs" are in the same class as those members of the race who were demanding "jim-crow schools" because some members of the race feel uncomfortable being American citizens, till hedged, and prefer to be "wards of the nation." The Public Safety Commission of the City Council that put themselves Monday on record as depicting that there shall in the future be no separate list of eligible for "jim-crow" firehouses; and that the colored men now on the eligible list will be distributed to the various tree-houses without any regard to race or color, is to be congratulated by all citizens, white or colored, for making a record for true Americanism. The California Race from the very beginning opposed further extension of the "jim-crow" features of our public institutions there, instigating if the Negro was good enough to fight and die in need be for American institutions, he was good enough to treat "white." The California Eagle wishes to again congratulate the Civil Service Commission, the Public Safety Commission, the City Council and the Mayor of this city that they had the magnificent courage to get away from the "straw leadership" of a number of discredited men of the race who for the sake of "marketable notoriety" have become "professional Negroes." Negroes who at times make it a business to misspeak for the whole race. And again, thank you gentlemen, and some ladies. Midnow while the Civil Service and Council acknowledge that this is tardy justice, the fair and square thing to do is not to call for an examination until the present list of chiebles is exhausted. It would be so easy for justice to be ciebled with a narrow head of department that the names of these men would remain where they are until doomsday if there was a possible way for them to evade a plain duty. MILITARY BRANCH ALL AMERICAN LEAGUE ORGANIZED On last Tuesday evening at the 14th street schoolhouse after the weekly drill by Capt T W Butler of the home guards, which company has been training at this place for the past six months. The shoody 'was addressed by Editor J. B Bass of the California Eagle, who is also State Organizer of the Ml American League, after which the entire body of 35 men present were organized as a military chapter of the All American League, with Captain Butler as president, Wilt Hall, secretary, Lieut Smith, treasurer, and F. W. White, Spars. The great interest of enthusiasm prevailed and the Members all expressed themselves as very much pleased to become a part of this great organization which guards for real progress and hope to do their bit for its future progress. The proficiency of these men under the able instruction of Capt. Butler was a revelation as they were put through the latest drills, they executed some of the most intricate and difficult formations as though they were seasoned veterans and Capt. Butler, his lieutenants and aides are entitled to great credit for the splendid work they are doing. All of our men from 18 years to 40 years must assist with this command in 40 hours as assistants and eventually national guards, soon as they have recruited up to the minimum strength of men who are physically fit, application will be made to muster in service of the state. Our people should back this movement to the utmost that we shall be right up to the minute in the military affairs of our state and that no section of this country shall excel California in patriotic duty or service.
