NOTICE This is to certify that The California Eagle, 833 Central Ave., Los Angeles, Calif., has this day purchased one brand new, latestm odel, 5-PASSENGER REO PHAETON, which is to be given away absolutely free as one of the many prizes in The California Eagle's "Everybody Wins" $4,000 Grand Prize Distribution. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, OCTOBER 19, 1923 "PORO" CLUB TRIUMPHANT Candidates Are Lining Up For Automobile And Cash Prize Distribution Campaign The above cut is a picture of the multitude which attended the outing at Bruces Beach on October 11. About 800 went down on the red cars while fully 350 more came down in automobiles. It was a gala day. A special educational program was rendered, after which, all sorts of contests were pulled off, races of all kinds and variety. Mr. Malone superintended the contests while Mrs. Malone awarded prizes to the winners of the various events. Dinner was served to this multitude and the inneryman was satisfied to the highest degree. A menu fit for a king was served and such was the service that the vast crowd was handled in perfect order and everybody got all they cared to eat. No restrictions were placed on service. Intense interest is being shown in The California Eagle's big campaign, in which a beautiful $1,795.00 Reo Phaeton Automobile and hundreds of dollars in big cash prizes will be given away to our own folks, readers and friends of The California Eagle. Men and women, boys and girls, are sending in their nomination blanks with their own name or that of a friend, on them and asking just how to go about winning the prizes of their choice. All of these prizes—even the fine $1,795.00 Reo Phaeton Automobile and an abundantly guaranteed cash prize to every active participant, will be given away absolutely free to all who take part and spend their spare moments that would otherwise be wasted for the next few weeks. You can't possibly lose in The California Eagle's "Everybody Wins" Grand Prize Distribution. It doesn't cost one cent to enter and win the very biggest of the prizes, and if you do not land one of the bigger awards, you will bepaid in cash for whatever you may make in the election, as advertised in the announcement. The "Poro Club" was a revelation to the people of Los Angeles and this band of women who are the representatives of the great Malone product, presented a most inspiring sight in their beautiful and mose becoming uniforms. Forming a semi-circle on the beach, looking out over the Father of Waters, and in the immediate center, the founder of "Poro" the President, Mrs. Cooper the sister of Mrs. Malone and Mr. Turnbo her brother, truly the fruition of time had wrought wonders and no greater service could be wrought than to create such a wonderful organization on these shores as the Los Angeles Poro Club. Mrs. C. H. Dodge of San Diego is visiting in the city. She is a special guest of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Malone. Mrs. Dodge having been a friend of many years standign in St. Louis, Mo. Hear Dr. Skipwith Sunday at 3:30 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, N. Bonnie Brae, at Court, Rev. W. H. Rizier, D. D., Pastor. Rev. W. H. Skipwith D. James Logan Craw who for a number of years pastored 8th and Towne Ave A. M. E. church of this city. Rev. Craw was a man of action and indeed had a brilliant future before him, and to his strenuous efforts toward serving the Master and to maintain this house of worship to the highest possible heights brought to him a complete nervous collapse from which he never recovered. After pastoring successfully here for four years he transferred to the Puget Sound Conference, served as presiding elder, pastored Seattle and Portland, his health giving away he with his family went back to his old home in Kansas. Rev. Craw was well and most favorably known in Los Angeles. The members of the 8th and Towne Ave especially will remember the great service which Dr. and Mrs. Craw rendered to this church. He came to a dismembered church and in a short time had gathered the fragments of its membership and made such a victorious battle for its re-establishment, that when victory perched on its banner. He was truly hailed as the "Miracle man." GRAND CAPITAL PRIZE ```markdown ``` Closely allied and responsible to a great degree for his success was his faithful and brilliant wife Mrs. Lhlian J. Craw, who was idolized by all who knew her for her real worth and her sunny disposition. The Young People of the whole Community regardless of denomination were inspired by this young woman and she wrought wonders in the church life of the young folk. The sympathy of all of these along with Los Angeles citizens goes out to her in this her sad hour of sorrow. The Engle especially offers condolence to this faithful wife and christian woman. In the loss of Dr. Craw $2.00 THE YEAR Y, OCTOBER 11. VICTOR'S HALL—NEW SOCIAL CENTER On next Sunday, October 21st, at 3 p. m. St. Victor's Hall will be formally declared open. St. Victor's hall is situated at 16th and Essex street, one block West of 16th St. and Central avenue. The building stands on a double corner lot. Albert C. Martin, a well-known Los Angeles architect, designed the hall in the mission style of architecture. It has a seating capacity of six to seven hundred. It has an elaborate stage and dressing room. There is a fully equipped kitchen attached. It boasts a handsome vestibule, with a large ladies' restroom in connection; a smoking room for gentlemen, cloak room and ticket room. Arrangements have also been made for the installation of an up-to-date moving picture machine. The hall combined, in ideal degree, architectural beauty and utility. It is conveniently located, as it is practically yin the heart of the city, and can be easily reached by street car from any point. The hall was erected for the purpose of providing a suitable home for social activity under Catholic auspices. It will serve as a center for cultural, social, recreational and educational activities. These activities will be open to all. The idea and aim is to be of service, not only yte the Catholic Colored people, but to the Race as a whole, without interfering in any way with the religious convictions of those who participate in these activities. Many speakers, both clerical and lay, will grace the occasion on next Sunday with their presence. A brilliant musical program has been arranged and light refreshments will be served. St. Victor's Hall will be thrown open to the public. All are cordially invited to come. No admission fee. I know that you would not knowingly misrepresent any one, or any cause. The New York papers along with many other papers of the American people have not all times been faultless in their representations of the accomplishments of the members of our group, and their attempt to show the relations between King Menik and Ellis is misleading and false. The relations of Ellis and Menik were most cordial and congenial, their acquaintance had its insipiency with the meeting of Mr. Ellis and General Ras. Mocarna (commander in chief of Meneliks Army) at the Caronation of King Edward VII in London when Edward was crowned King of England on the invitation of General Poultry MARKET Central Avenue Geese, Ducks, Turkeys----All the Right Prices! Mocarn Mr. Ellis visited the Kingdom of Abyssinia about the year 1902 and presented King Menelik with gold mounted Revolver studded with diamonds, and also presented General Ras. Mocarna wit he saddle built in the City of Mexico at a cost of $3500,000 King Menelik in turn presented Mr. Ellis with possession fronting 150 miles along the river Nile, they then organized the Menelik and Ellis National Bank of Abyssinia with a capital stock of $2,000,000 and was at all times the best of friends. The mention of Ellis' attempt to overthrow King Menelik is base falsehood, and the gift of 150,000,000 acres is worse than false, there is not a 150,000,000 in the Kingdom of Abyssinia. I am enclosing you clippings from a writeup of Mr. Ellis and also one of my own which I can vouch for as being absolutely correct.
