James Logan Craw who for a number of years pastored 8th and Towne Ave A. M. E. church of this city. Rev. Craw was a man of action and indeed had a brilliant future before him, and to his strenuous efforts toward serving the Master and to maintain this house of worship to the highest possible heights brought to him a complete nervous collapse from which he never recovered. After pastoring successfully here for four years he transferred to the Puget Sound Conference, served as presiding elder, pastored Seattle and Portland, his health giving away he with his family went back to his old home in Kansas. Rev. Craw was well and most favorably known in Los Angeles. The members of the 8th and Towne Ave especially will remember the great service which Dr. and Mrs. Craw rendered to this church. He came to a dismembered church and in a short time had gathered the fragments of its membership and made such a victorious battle for its re-establishment, that when victory perched on its banner. Craw, who was idolized by all who knew her for her real worth and her sunny disposition. VICTOR'S HALL—NEW SOCIAL CENTER On next Sunday, October 21st, at 3 p. m. St. Victor's Hall will be formally declared open. St. Victor's hall is situated at 16th and Essex street, one block West of 16th St. and Central avenue. The building stands on a double corner lot. Albert C. Martin, a well-known Los Angeles architect, designed the hall in the mission style of architecture. It has a seating capacity of six to seven hundred. It has an elaborate stage and dressing room. Underwood, Pastor We are still prospering at Phillips Chapel. We are having wonderful Sunday Schools. The pastor preached a wonderfully spiritualizing sermon Sunday morning; his text, Rev. 14.3. Phillips Chapel is one of the most progressive churches in the city. Two were added to the church Sunday morning. The choir sang Sunday maunoudom somou joi ao ao 14qm churches in Hollywood and the choir will sing at the Independent of Christ Sunday at 3: p. m. at 18th, and Paloma Streets. NEW HOPE BAPTIST CHURCH It is nothing more than usual, now, for eight or ten persons to connect themselves with New Hope, soon Sunday. The services are so inspiring and the Spirit of God seems to prevail to such an extent that persons only in the audience to visit, are forced by their own conscience to join. The pastor preached in his usual son-in-law manner. Sunday morning, and in the evening, Rev. M. F. Mitchell filled the pulpit. Both seminars were enjoyed greatly. Newly elected officers of the Senior Missionary Society were installed in a beautiful manner by Mrs. Robinson at the morning service. Solists were: Mr. C. B. Brooks and Mr. J. B. Shotwell. PHILLIES CHAPEL C. M. E. CHURCH Dr. R. W. Underwood, Pastor Long before preaching hour the people were soon rushing to the church in order to get seats. The pastor was at himself Sunday morning. He preached as never before from the 11th Chapter of the Revelation and the third verse. Subject: 'Anthemsof Earth Transferred to Heaven.' Many tears were shed during the sermon. The pastor sang a solo. He then opened the doors of the church and two persons came forward and joined the church. Prof. R. M. Mitchell and his choir are singing as never before. The New York papers along with many other papers of the American people have not all times been faultless in their representations of the accomplishments of the members of our group, and their attempt to show the relations between King Menik and Ellis is misleading and false. The relations of Ellis and Menik were most cordial and congenial, their acquaintance had its insipiency with the meeting of Mr. Ellis and General Ras. The mention of Ellis' attempt to overthrow King Menelik is base falsehood, and the gift of 150,000,000 acres is worse than false, there is not a 150,000,000 in the Kingdom of Abyssinia. Dones, who spent a part of last week in Sacramento and Sah Francisco is back in Los Angeles.
