May 31 -- For some time there has been a tendency on the part of a great number of southwesterners to account for the southern white churchmen together in an endeavor to come to some common understanding annot the session of hearing with the southern white man's conception of how it should be handed without conference or consultation with the Northern Baptist Convention or any other organization. Many speakers to ascertain the attitude of southern whites declared that it was but a piece of the southern part of northern white man's conception to endeavor to intrude themselves into the affairs of the South as respects the Negro. "We know the Negro better than anybody else and also how to handle him best. We don't need any outside advice or help in taking care of the situation!" one speaker called Negro problem. In an effort to ascertain the attitude of southern whites was brought before the convention last Wednesday by the exe- proval of the whole city of Houston and the state at large. First, there was an injunction gotten out by a supposed belief to the land which had to be disposed of before the title was clear. Then it happened that there were many offers on the part of the white citizens of Houston to purchase the land. But none of the offers seemed sufficient to move the governing heads of the Order to sell. Later, it developed that there would be some trouble in obtaining permission of the state officers to allow the Grand Lodge to finance its own concern and the work of construction was delayed by this. Grand Master Gore with his usual tact and skill worked and met obstacle after obstacle, occupying always and clearing the way for the realization of the dream of many persons that the Grand Lodge has had and saving the way for the increasing of the real estate and wealth of the Order.
