Grand Master's Address Pleasing; Report of Endowment Secretary Shows Order Has Assets Over One Million Dollars
It has not yet happened that the best of both of the races have come together in that sort of harmony and unity of spirit on account in the mutual wall being of them both. We could wish, that more of your people could see and appreciate as you and we have seen the splendid progress that has been curs since the shackles were stricken from our limbs. It may not appear to you who have a thousand of years of civilization behind you that the progress that has been made in the past 60 years by us is much. But to it it does appear to me great. And we would that you and yours could see something of the soul

The respective merits of Dallas and Houston was engaged in by the two Editors, who sold Editor Rice in his remarks of welcome compared Houston with Dallas giving to Houston the benefit of having been outstripped by Dallas with the statement that Houston had been outstripped by Dallas. The argument was presumably settled by W. P. The intermission was filled by four teenagers of Nathaniel Delfa and a baritone of pleasing ability and performance. His selection was accustomed to the first appearance of the company in his first number that was signal for one of the greatest overtones in the music of Nathaniel Delfa and a baritone in Dallas. The applause lasted several minutes and K was with difficulty that Mr. Delfa repeated quite easily the line of the meeting of the National Association of Musicians of which he has recently been honored presiding the stage as Chancellor.
He was forced to response to two questions during the course of the meeting.
Priorly also the selection of the college's clubs of Fort Worth and Houston, the sole role held by Mr. Jermain was the chairman of the Men Brown of Waco. Miss Giles of Fort Worth, and Miss Pimpinback, of Fort Worth, was under the direction and supervision of Miss Purdue Washington Pilgrim of Dallas, and the head of the Department of Music at Paul Grassin College at Dallas. and an institution only ten years from insolvency.
When our white friends found they would not be able to make a profitable investment by financing an interest in our project and refused to assist the contractor in making bond. he was unable to do so he went to the Master was insistent that he furnish us with a good and solvent bond. Being unable to do this we refused to allow him to go on
In the case where title to our property was questioned the claimant came for trial. Mr. Mackenzie took out when time came for trial. In dealing with the Commissioner of Innsurvey, he seemed that he thought we should cut down the cost of the building. We carried his objections to the commissioner and that he tell us just what could be changed to conform to the wishes of the Commissioner. The street structure could be chaged to reinforce concrete without in the least amount of cost. In making the statement and that a big part of the decorative stone could be eliminated. In making the statement, $28,000 could be effected. This was agreeable to the Commissioner. The original contract price was $247,000. The cost of the building will cost $219,500. This removed the last obstacle in building the relief of the Grand Master.
All these transactions are simple to relate, but were difficult to track. I tasked the very soul of my strength to take the tame, the tamed, the tamed. I may triumphantly that I have over some and your building is on the ground. I may have the amount with the greatest possible returns in revenue to amply repay the debt.
I want to thank the entire membership for joining in this effort, the officers and committees for their local cooperation. We all joined hands, means and efforts to ensure that the success would be impossible. To all in then goes the credit for when completed the building will stand as a lasting monument to the glorious accomplishments of our team. When completed it will be a fine tribute to their financial and cooperative ability; to their hard work and mark of progress and to all a matter of justifiable pride.
year of $41,922.17. This item of available funds does not include the amount invested in the bank and the ground on which it is being erected. If this amount were the amount of the order would be far in excess of $900,000. The total discount past twelve months was $183.51. Secretary Riddle made his report more interesting by his comments on the building of the tempter and that was necessary in putting over the job in the way that it should. The report of District Grand Secretary James T. Ewing showed that up to the date of its result Temple tax had been $46,382.10 and that in the balance to the credit of the bank upon it was $7,385.68 that a total of $223.26 had been contributed to
Supervisors do good work on field. One of the most pleasing of the duties of a supervisor is to give the grand lodge权 that of B. Y. Ayckow who for the past year has had charge of the drives for the superintendent's three workers were placed on the field and the increase of nearly 50% no memorial to the efforts of these men. Much interest centered in the reports during the meeting and allowed to tell of their experiences while on its field. Said Mr. Ayckow: "There you were not able to increase the complained that because of the efforts of other lodges of the state you were not able to increase the same thing. There is no reason to feel that you cannot increase your order of the same thing. It only takes the brief in your own concern. It only takes the nerve to go out and get the order that in the next year more will come into the order and that it may soon lead the State in action."
Joint sessions of the grand lodge and of the conferences of the lodge which meet weekly which time many question relating to the conduct of the order of the lodge. The temple nearing completion The corner of Louisiana and the temple at all times in progress of construction was the Mecca of all of the delegates at all times in progress of building which is well under way stands in a commanding position and is to the neighborhood in which it stands and to the fraternity which Reports of the dofings of the closing hours of the grand lodge will be contained in the release

Said Mr. Pinkett: "The problems of life insurance are problems in character building. The unit of death and decay. The value of life insurance lies in its work in character building. The unit of death and decay determines the amount of service which it will be able to render. Men must learn three things: to know, to control and to give themselves. They must know how to deal with the day of simple trying has long since past." President, he spoke very briefly and introduced due to the fact that he was to speak at the meeting of the afternoon. Through our loyalty and fidelity to it in city and state, we have materially aided it in electing its candidates. From it we have been given scant recognition. When we consider that none of the Republicans who now hold office at the State House would be thus honored were it not for the Colored voters, we cannot but feel a sense of regret for the party that rides into office, and only recognize the element that is responsible for its success by giving this element a jantorship.
Disneymer house the white patient, another it has been idolized by the yellow streak. It is not affiliated with the yellow mouth. It is a plait, every day, to which, when we call to watch, the hailing brooches; files on a double flag? It professes a hatricism at the game of guessing the names of the game of justice covers all the torkery accepted by the human race, and we live on it and are pronounced. Bare of the past came out groundly to help.
"The time has come for the Negro in Delaware to assert himself politically and we hereby request the Republican party to recognize the fact that we are no longer satisfied with its attitude toward us, and we go on record in requesting the party to recognize our claims to hold office in the state, and we request of the Republican party that a Colored man shall be named for one of the state offices at the coming state convention.

NEGRO AUTOMOBILE
RACING
News reports have it that at the nationally known speedway in Indianapolis there will be a series of races in which only Nero drivers will compete. Already there are many contests and many thousand tickets have been sold for the occasion.
This sport among our people will not by any means be ignored. We have all had fair to make it as well known as baseball and the other forms of sport that are popular in our country. This is as it should be. It should happen that we should seek enlightenment and that we should mind that bring pleasure and prof. and it which tend to make of us the same sort of folks as are all of us. A greater participation in contexts of this sort will do much to increase the spirit of philosophy that has been inculcated in us of the desire to know more about the world from all of those things that savor of chance and danger because of the chances that they
Dallas and its First National Gathering
It is probably true that little or no thought is commonly given to the importance of protection, because it empowers us but it is a fact that it colors the majority of our actions. We deploy the fact that we protect ourselves and our women the proper sort of protection. It is true that that they do not care about it, but they fear the fear of what will follow any attempt of thirst to see to it that they are given the respect that they deserve. The significance of our leaders in crucial moments but their failures are being drilled into them by generations of repressions of those instances that lead human beings to fear. Fear is the greatest enemy of all human kind. And to us in this world, we must be in that it beads us to see danger where there is none and to become a panic stricken victim.
And just as the highest degree of praise is but just in the case of those who did the best of which they were capable for the success of this meeting so it is just to condemn in no uncertain terms those who by their lack of interest and pure refusal to aid in the success of the project would have caused the reputation of the state to be endangered. And it is a fact that there were those who did fall miserably in this regard. And the most unfortunate feature of it all is that they were members of the teaching profession of this city and state. There were some of the teachers of Dallas who failed miserably and refused to aid in any way in making of this meeting the success which was bequeathed for
Let the racing game become popular among us. Let us engage more fully in the race and help in the creation of that sort of sane and reasonable thinking that does not necessarily discount race officials and then go ahead in the pursuit of the thing desired.
There should be a great deal of satisfaction to Touma in the thought that there are three races in the world that are in position financially to erect and maintain home offices and in them to furnish office spaces and in them to provide the men and professional men of the race. It marks a step forward in our progress toward an environment that we worth sustaining.
It has never been the policy of the Express to make public those things which are unfortunate. It has always been willing to pass over as far as it was humanly the shortcomings of the narrow minded in the hope that in time there would come to them a broadened vision that would make their actions more commensurate with what they should be. But in the case of teachers who are supposed to know what is right and proper and who have the men-

small a part of his time and energy as was necessary in the case of this meeting, to maintain the dignity of that city or state is unworthy of residence in it.
In Dallas there were principals who refused to aid in any way in the financing of the meeting. And not only that. They refused to urge their teachers to help in any way in the plans for it. In the state at large, there were principals, teachers, and students who challenged the idea to put in their appearance or to make it known by any means that they had any interest in it.
They had no concession of their duty as members of the profession. They were ignorant of their duty as hosts. They had no sense of responsibility for the reputation of the states in which they lived and worked and from which they draw all of their support.
Too much censure cannot be given them. They failed when contribution counted. They have their flea-like soils and from now on they should be made to feel the sting of public disapproval. Texas needs no such small men to lead their children. Their vision is too cramped. The lessons which they teach must of necessity be Colored with some color. The children will fail to see fully and sense clearly their duty to their state, city or other units of which they in future time may become parts.

That the Negro voters of Delaware have become thoroughly disgusted with the attitude of the Republican Party in that state and are willing to cast their allegiances to another party if the conditions of which they complain are not remedied is gleaned from news dispatches making public a set of resolutions passed recently by a conference of the voters of the state. The resolutions deplore the lack of opportunity that is granted Negro lawyers to practice before the bar and the general lack of recognition that characterizes the party leaders in the state. Says the resolution:
From the newspaper articles it appears that the colored people are getting the European haemophilia. Some of some prominent colored man from some part of the country who is visiting Europe--some going for study and some for travel. Some are college men and some are
"For more than 50 years the Colored voters of Delaware have consistently supported the Republican party has been in continuous control of the state government for the past twenty-five years no Colored man has been permitted to practice law in any of the courts of Delaware, a state that has the unenviable distinction being the only state in the union that debates Colored men from practicing law. This must be corrected and we call on the Republican party to take the necessary steps to correct this reprehensible practice.
This travel to Europe is a very hopeful sign. It not only indicates more of intelligence and prosperity in Europe, but also species. Our own belief is that every colored man, who has, a chance, ought to spend a vacation in Europe, is the air of human equality such as he cannot breathe in America. We believe that in spite of all the challenges we face, we contribute to the greatest contributions to
"We point with pride to the independent attitude assumed by the members of the Race two years ago, when, with remarkable Race feeling, we defeated the Republican candidate for Congress in Delaware, after warning the Republican party, that we would thus act if our wishes were not respected. Delaware Negroes set the pace for the Negroes of the country in political independence. Today in convention assembled we make certain charges against, and specific requests of the Republican party. Our allegiance to it in the future is dependent on its attitude with respect to the granting of our requests. We shall support the Republican party only to the extent that it shall support us and grant our requests."
For The Woman
THE WOMAN WHO CARES
WILL THE HIGH WAISTLINE RETURN?
When the lovely lady of the Dressroom appears we are not entrancing. We ever any other fashion was no entrenching. There is a perfection of grace and sweetness about the silhouette, with its high waistline, that is associated with the days when young girls sought to pattern themselves after Jane
An unusual feature of its present revival is the fact that America is now a country in its adoption than do the French. At the Paris openings for summer there were many whispering and cheering girls, but few of the designers cared to take the stand that they would be a part of the fashion season. It's a perfect type of frock for the unconcealed figure, which is often the American girls and small women are asking for it in city shops and demanding a design over them.
"We recite the fact that in each of the three counties of the state, Colored men are not allowed to serve on the jury, that when we have business in the courts we are segregated. This notwithstanding the judges of the courts are largely Republicans. We condemn this practice and call on the party which we have so generously supported in the past to correct these conditions.
5 HINTS FOR THE SAFE HAND LING OF SILKS AND WOOLENS
The Express believes that this is the proper attitude for these voters to assume. There can be satisfaction in supporting any party simply for the satisfaction that comes from such support when there are conditions that are in the power of that part yto remedy and it refuses to remedy them.
NIK stockings should be washed in Ivory wards before the first wearing, and after each wearing of perspiration quickly insilk use.
That the voters in Delaware have the power to force better treatment at the hands of the Republican Party has been evidenced in the past. That conditions have not changed can be due only to the fact that never before have they made their wishes so plainly known. No Negro lawyers in Delaware! No appointed officers! None of the things that are commonly recognized as just ordinary things to be expected in the course of political events.
If stockings have clocks different in color from the body fabric be sure to stuff cheesecloth or amulet towel into the ankle while drying.
Iron dotted awls and embroidered fabrics on wrong side over thick pad.
Certainly that resolution should be backed by action. Only relationships that are mutually helpful are welcome relationships. As conditions now stand there is nothing at all accruing to the Negro voters of that state from their allegiance to the party. They can well afford to take a decided stand for broadened opportunities.
Too hot an iron will rot silk if the irons makes the paper smoke. it is too hot.
Never rub, wring or twist a woolen sweater. When washing, spuzeze the suds through the fabric repeatedly; rinse by squeezing; dry by lying on a towel in the shade.
A drop of bluing added to the cleaning powder will use for white clothing; it will wear the shoe much whiter when dry.
The National Association of Teachers in Colored Schools has just closed its annual meeting here and the consensus of opinion is that it is the best in point of finance, numbers and interest that has ever been held. Because of the system and efficiency with which Principal Rhoads and those teachers who worked under him made the plans for its reception Texas and Dallas have increased in importance in the thinking of educators from all parts of the nation. It is good that this is so. It is well that those educators who visited the state and city for the first time were able to gain so favorable an idea of the ability of Texans to perform efficiently. Certainly it is true that all of those both teachers and members of the general public who in any way did anything to help in the entertainment of that group showed the true Dallas spirit and upheld the dignity of the state in a highly commendable way.

COL. J. O. MIDNIGHT STILL TRAVELLING.
Kansas City, Missouri—We do not come into the world to stay yet when we leave there is always sadness and pain, and why we should weep when a christian leaves the world of stab and step into the world of such yet such is upon now to pay a tribute to two characters, mother and daughter, who have gone home. Mrs. Lillian Wittenberg, her daughter Mary Vilvonn Wittenberg, the wife and daughter of Rev. Edward Wittenberg, and Mrs. A. M. E. Church, Kansas City Mo. Mary stepped into the kingdom first, 11:10 Thursday night July 10 and at 1:20 Friday morning July 11. Mrs. Wittenberg joked her daughter, and there is sadness in that house, but they must not be ripped out, and each one must some day join them.
Do you know what it is to have your first love the wife of your youth to live by your side for 27 years, mother of 14 of your children, and just the time you are getting real pleasure out of life. A grown daughter filling a position in life, son ready for College and then to see the younger children off for school in the morning and returning in the evening full of sunshine and happiness, then death come in and you are in trouble. Children. If you do then you are in position to say a word to Rev. Wittenburg.
Lilian Strobe, a native of New Orleans La., at the age of 17 accepted the hands of Rev. Witkensburg, then he a youth working in the mailing room of the Pivary House, a daily paper in the Pivary House. He had declared to her that he had needed her encouragement, her words of sympathy and love. She entered into his life, to suffer if he suffered, to weep if he weep and to rejoice if he rejoiced. With her, she met her husband, together. Just to think of it, his moneyless youth with his bride, shortly after marriage, entered determination to better perpare himself. For five years he remained in school and she was a teacher. He helped children and assisting him. He has panored in Paulette, Painting Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Mississippi, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, then the church of his youth, St. James, New Orleans, and from it to Allen Chapel, Kansas City.
Now here is a case where a man has lost a companion, for he was a church work, and at times he has raised as high as $2,000 for his wife, and now he was trapped in the middle of the year, and was to entertain the conference, he left the church work, and she remained there looked after the church work, entertained the conference, and husband here. She has been with him in the work here not two years, but the time has been well
While Rev. Wittemberg was in Louisville, KY, attending the genetics institute, he took to her bed, but did not inform him, because he was in Louisville on a mission and I remember he was a friend, I remember when I passed thrice early in June, she told me that she was going to be a nurse, as I had been in fighting the bugs, but she would go home. I tried to go home, but I was not able to night to help me when I was suffering in her home just one year ago. I would not want to drift away.
Mary Vivian Wittenberg took sick in June, and her mother realised she would have to go and points to die, and only wanted that she die first. Both were confined in the same hospital and she had to be taken to Wittenberg an effort was made to keep the condition of her daughter from her, but shortly after she was taken she received a direct message, she then said "Mary has gone and I am gone also," and after that she said "Lord have mercy upon my husband, he is too good a Christian to bear all of. Lord have mercy upon the words on her lips she was placed back in bed and soon her soul took its flight to the God of heaven, and six children, William, Flora Junita, Edward, Margaret and Bobbie, and other relatives and
Thousands of people gathered at Allen Chapel Monday July 14 to pay tribute to Wittenberg, the daughter, Mary Vivian. Many were unable to get even as claustro as the church where they were present, and many of them took part in the funeral. The cries were present and many of them delivered eulogies. Rev. and Mrs. Wittenberg were my friends, and their home was now in the church. Now, the children all think much of Col. J. O. Middight and are ever ready to do something. When I met my handkerchiefer when I am at the house, I say to my more, but I am sure that you need people to want to something else about what I have been and what I have done.
character of this race I want to tell you about in my next letter, and that is Dr. Trice, of Chicago who is an old Texan, and was a great physician. I strives me that I wrote you to from Stateville, North Sarolina, and if I tell you where I have been since that time you will say I am the most travel-vested man in the world, and I will not blame you much. For when them Physicians closed out there and some of them shook did not, for they did not see me. The lady came down to the stable to see me enter the iron horse and leave for home. That is I went to Charlottes, N. C., and when I had had gotten through there we next morning for Raleigh, N. C.
I was Charles Stewart, Jr., imprise his father, and I enjoyed see-see and look at his son. He presided Sunday morning at Olive Baptist Church, and he seemed to be at home when he walked up and said "Father I am here to go home with you." The old man started for the church and said "Come this way father..." You see that boy had purchased Fort coop and his father did not buy it. Fort coop is a special delivery messenger in the Chicago post office and he gives it an increase his earning capacity. He is a boy who tries to do things like his father—in fact in many ways he is not doing anything says to the world that he is going to be an improvement on his father. This old man has never been in the world but he owns one now by relation, and he carried his mother and
Sunday evening at 8 o'clock I was in a bed car on the C. A. Iron horse wagon, headed for the gas station, and did step on the gas or something else, for at 8:15 the next morning and Rev. Wittshire was down to receive a call from the president to call on me and had a few words to say. He toed me back to the stable in his fine automobile car and the Grand Court of Calcutta, Kansas, where I met the Grand Lodge of Knights of Pythaea, and the Grand Court of Calcutta, where I told you that this was some meeting. It is wonderful about the progress this great body is making, and the grand court for our people. It seems that the white people just go wild over this organization. They watched the people work, got in every public meeting they could, and spoke in terms of praise of the two leaders. Dr. S. Davis, and there was the head of the uniform rank, General Thomas Kennedy, and he made some
So impressed we the people that the City Commissioner, the City Clerk, the City Carer, the carer in the parade carry with him Grand Chancellor S. H. Thompson, Grand Worthy Counsellor S. H. Thompson, and J. O. Middleton. Don't you know you have the big head, and I am going to be a big head. Don't you know you are around my head to keep it from burning open. You may write to me P. O.
