this ambition was no small matter, but it is probable that his claim to the possession of those quotients would be found in another phase of his public life. He rose to "the top of the ranks of the officers of eight years of constant work in it in a manner very solid and disciplined," as a delegate to the grand lodge from his local lodge later. Later, he was appointed to a position in the grand lodge to cause his objection to Marter's Grand Jurisdiction. Then began his rise, step by step, worn by hard work and the position. A position which he has filled since the new era, from nothing to an institution worth more than a half-cuban dollar, has given him the position which paid actual money to beneficiaries.
Cotton pickers wanted is the burden of the song which the cotton growers of Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas have been singing through the press of the south for the past few weeks. The wording of the song is often difficult, which exists only in the minds of a few men of the race who, for few years ago, that the nation that the continuation of poor schools for Negro children, and in many cases, no schools, increased lynching, durafragmentation, lack of protection in the courts of the land and all of the kindred eyes of that sort from which Negroes in those areas were raised. The picture for whites where better living conditions prevailed. Those pictures were painted years ago but they were unheeded. Lynching continued; disfamishment continued to pass unnoticed; schools were not improved; the rights of Negroes continued to be disregarded; and today—these sections in which by now the fields would have filled with singing black men and women who picked the silver lice from glass windows with cotton but desolate as far as the singing workers are.
They said that white laborers would be imported to harvest the crop as well in plant it, but that has not happened. They claimed that the Negro, unused to the rigors of the climate of the North would soon return to the Southland. But that has not happened and cotton pickers are needed. They said that the Negro would be properly come, is to prove of the usual amount of benefit. But—as plain as is the lesson which this lack of laborers' teach, evidently, some proftions of the South still refuse to learn. Last week three white men a Negro to death in Arkansas because he refused to pour water in their car when he was accompanying the women for a picnic. The Negro was another birching in Mississippi recently and the sitter was a half witted imbecile who should have been in an institution for the demented. Georgia continues in its attiretie to Negroes who have the temerity to pass white men in the road without lifting their hats. It is in Georgia also that the Negro schools, out of a huge bond issue are to receive practically nothing. in Louisiana, it still is beautiful and beautiful. It is beautiful wife and daughter, that are universally respected.
There can be no reason for the response of sensible men to the appeals for workers in states in which men with black skins have no protection and no guarantees of opportunity to improve their lot. In Georgia there are 'whole houses' where black men are allowed to move them to grow up in weeds. The same is true of Louisiana and Mississippi in many instances. These workers, who now are so scorned久留 have gone to stay. They have no remote ideas of returning and their reasons are to be found in the lack of demeanor treatment which they have received. The South may as well face the facts. If it would continue to exist as the agricultural backbone of the world, it must have laborers. The best labor supply found to date is the American Negro. But the time has passed in which he is to be expected to live under the shamrock laws of the United States for fifty years. His contacts with the culture of the nation as evidenced by the progress of the cities which he has been privileged to visit; his knowledge of the other part of the world gained by his travel during the war; his rising and growing consciousness of the needs of all progressive people; his growing awareness of the disadvantages which have been his portion in the past. Let poor schools continue. Let it happen that his cases in court are always decided against him in favor of those whose skins are white instead of in accordance with the law; let lynchings continue with no punishment to follow; let blacks in Mississippi and Arkansas with the plan for workers be heard; in every state where these conditions are to be found.
TIMES CHANGES IN OUR LEADERSHIP
aggressive and cunning political leader of the race for more than a blather of a century, and of John W. Work, famous director of the Fisk Jubilee shapers whose life was spent in service of Fisk University. All about there are signs of success, including the leadership bring room for the advancement some other prepared man or woman. Our leadership is changing in obedience to the dictates of That Great Manager who shifts the actors in the drama of Life at will. Those who are passing have served their day and time accounted for by the leaders and have made for themselves a reputation for service which is sylvilike. They have willingly. They sacrificed gladly. They served freely during times when quantity and quality of services were not measured by dollars and cents. Them was the lack of bashing a trail of progress for a new generation of leaders. They deserved to follow and which, through force of circumstance was overshadowed by the nearness of a time when respect for the ability of black men was a firing unknown. It was the deeds of these leaders which turned the spot light of public opinion upon this struggling race and made it possible for those who shall come after to continue the race.
They made mistakes of course. But who can dare greatly and do commendably without error? It is possible that in the latter days when the thoughts of men have been bound to a pace that is slightly faster than in the days when they were curved securely. But the reputation for achievement which they made can be deplored as yet by none of their writers; for the record of the latter is yet to be written. The passing of these leaders is be murmured; not as the final chapter in the life of a race, for there will come officers, who will be able to judge the progress of the race in which we live, but their passing should be marked thanks to Providence that such leaders could have been raised when their leadership was no badly needed and their monuments should be forever seen in the graftfulness of those whose successes in the future will have been made locally by the work of those who are passively so rapidly acquainted with the progress of the race, accompanied by younger men in the future, though it may not worthy of mention and though the fame which the world accounts them may be greater, all of it can be traced to the work of the trained leaders of the other education who bravely trail and prepared the bridges over difficult places for their time; it is changing our leadership and the record of those who have contributed in the progress of the race during the last half century.
