Boys' Conference Held At Library Boys' Conference Held At Library The first Older Boy Conference for this section of the state, under the samples of the State Y. M. C. Being a new understanding among our group, it was well attended and dealt a deal of interest with Mr. W. C. Craver of the Colored Men's department of New York, was present and delivered two very inspiring addresses while the entire program was presented. Mr. W. Craver presented a spring. The boys manifested a great deal of interest in the four-fold chart on the spiritual, physical, intellectual and social phases of this life. He delegated himself and could demonstrate the standard of a well-developed four-square boy. M. E. L. Jordan, boys work secretary at the Central Association, conducted the charting as based on the Christian citizenship training program of the state. Upon completion of the day schools, it was announced the conference stage upon being in Beaumont. The fellowship members were elected: President, Anthony Harris, Houston; first vice president, John B. Smith, Houston; second vice president, O. E. Smith, Houston; third vice president, J. I. HOUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, MARCH 31, 1923 Ethiopia's Place In the World's History By REV. W. P. STANLEY, Vicar S. Ciaran's Episcopal Church INTRODUCTION. Astounding and almost cataclysmic, as well as lauded have taken place in the Negro's attitude toward cide cipation days. No longer does the Negro seek, cohide his Hamitic origin. He is realizing more and a futtable fact that no race is inherently superior or knows and agrees with that noted psychologist and Prof. Franz Boas of Columbia University, that shows that persons of low will power and low moral found among the whites as among any other peo there is nothing whatever to show that there is an as potential racial superiority." In addition these practices follow a well known law of group psychology in keeping of which the minority tend to be more dominant than the majority. The Negro is surrounded HOUSTON GETS BERTH IN TEXAS COLORED LOOP At a recent meeting of the Texas Colored League directors in this city, the league adopted and cities chosen to be represented in the circuit during 1923. The Negro, being human, obeys the law. Further in keeping with this law, Dan Crawford, in his book, "Thinking Black," and many other missionaries have stated that Africans regard white as a natural and natural body, and, in some tribes, the derogatory is represented by white images. H. M. Stanley, the young African explorer, said that he blushed at his own repulsion to the pale color of Europeans when he returned from Africa, where he had seen only dark skins and the "richer bronze color." It is a happy augury for the growth of racial consciousness that among Negroes thousands of Negro dolls are used as toys in the home, thereby increasing the importance of black women in the home. Let us have more of them. There are numerous reasons for this pride in being a Negro, and in a later installment these reasons will be traced. It is sufficient at this time to point to one—the Negro Associated Press. There is no organization among us that deserves more commonsalation and racial respect than this medium of communication, through which the world is kept informed of Negroes's interests. Without this splendid organ of publicity there would be no sustained and concerted world-wide presentation of Negro life and aims, and without this international presentation both measures are not sufficient to sustain带गे (To be continued.) COLORED TEXANS SHOW INTEREST IN 5TH HEALTH WEEK COLORED TEXANS SHOW INTEREST IN 5TH HEALTH WEEK (Special to The Informer.) Austin, Tex.-F. Rivers Barnwell, lecturer to Negroes, Texas Public Health Association, states that great interest in the observance of "Fifth Annual Negro Health Week" in Texas is being shown. Over eight thousand programs for the week have been sent to group leaders all over the state. The plans for the week include lectures and sermons on various health subjects, health talks to children, parades and pageants, cleaning of yards, alleys, buildings, etc.; also practical health demonstrations. It is hoped that the readers of this article will get behind the movement for a healthier race and do their utmost to insure a successful week. Health is your greatest asset. If you will assist nature she will do much to prevent alkness that costs the nation millions of dollars each year. One good way to assure yourself of good health is to have a yearly examination by your physician. It is at these examinations that minor defects can be located and corrected before they become serious. A good shopman for the week is, Health for All—All for Health. Let us all work to make Texas a healthier place in which to live. HOUSTON PRODUCT JOINS FACULTY OF LOS ANGELES HIGH According to the Jeffersonian, weekly newspaper published by the Jefferson High school, Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Coral Gilmore-Johnson, Houston product and daughter of Mr. Leon A. Gilmore, formerly connected with the Houston Observer, is now doing preparatory teaching in the music department at Jefferson. Mrs. Johnson is a former student of the College of Music at Berkeley and graduate of the Teachers' College at S. R. U. C. She is instructor in sight singing and piano classes and is a accompanist for the girls' senior glee club. Jefferson High school now has 108 faculty members gathered from all parts of the country. Mrs. Johnson is now studying piano with Prof. Vernon Spencer, formerly director of music for twelve years in the conservatory at Lelpsig, Germany, and four years at the Stein conservatory. He is very pleased with Mrs. Johnson's work. He personally recommended her to teach piano in Jefferson High school. At the end of the term, Mr. Spencer will examine Mrs. Johnson's classes at Jefferson as they appear in recital. In June, Mrs. Johnson will receive the bachelor's degree, in addition to the California state teachers' certificate, which will enable her to teach in the high schools of that state. JOIN HOUSTON C. C. C. TODAY! GIRLS! WANT TO MARRY! GET JOB AT LINCOLN! 16 GOT HUBBIES THERE! Advice to the love-lorn, flappers, flirts, old maids and grass widows: If you wish to get married and that presto! connect yourself with a theater and especially the Lincoln, South's finest colored playhouse. This is the suggestion or tip of Mr. O. P. DeWalt, proprietor-manager of the Lincoln theater, who says with an air of resignation: "Yes, the consummation of the nuptials of Dr. G. A. Allen and Miss Johnnie Henry marked the end of the thirteenth (13th) courtship that has started here and ended in matrimony. It seems that the spirit of confidence so apparent among the employees of the Lincoln finds or creates a mutual confidence in someone else, with the result that I lose a good employee and some man gains a good wife." Judging by this hymeneal record it is very evident that the Lincoln is performing many good services, aside from giving the colored public the best to be had in pictures. Many happy years of this to the Lincoln! Don't rush for a job at the Lincoln, girls and girlies, for there is no vacancy right now. NOTICE! "He is risen; he is not here." These ringing, cheering and s narratives or gifts of Mathew to the women who appeared at been interred, on the morn of the day. These good women, as was the ments, and, despite the fact that These ringing, cheering and startling words, according to the narratives or gospeles of Matthew, Mark and Luke, were uttered to the women who appeared at the sepulchre, where Christ had been interred, on the morn of the day that we now call Easter Sunday. These good women, as was the custom, came with precious ointments, and despite the fact that the Master had told them that He would rob death of its sting and snatch from the grave its victory, they were dumfounded and stood aghast as the angel messenger in the interior of the tomb proclaimed the Savior's resurrection. As the Apostle Paul said in latter years, "Now is Christ risen from the dead and become the first fruit of them that slept." His resurrection was just as necessary as His death, for had He remained in the tomb; had He decayed, decomposed and returned to the dust of the earth; had the sepulchre been able to retain Him; had the Roman government been able to triumph over Him, the entire fabric of our faith would have been destroyed and Christianity rendered a nonentity. The Apostle Paul discusses the resurrection of Jesus Christ as the foundation and basis of the Christian faith, summing his argument up in these words: "And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain." Most of our readers are quite familiar with the historical facts connected with passion week; the betrayal of Jesus by Judas Iscariot; the trial before Pontius Flilate and the finding of no fault in Him by the Roman ruler; Peter's impetuosity and pugnacity; the part that Simon, the ebony-hued Cyrenian, played in bearing the cross to Calvary's summit; and the ultimate crucifixion of the Redeemer upon Golgatha's rugged heights. According to Divine decree, at the appointed hour angelic messengers, on the wings of much alicrity, flew from the heavenly abode, caused sleep to take possession of the weared limbs of the Roman guards, rolled away the stone from the tomb and Christ arose and marched majestically and divine from the sepulchre, triumphant over death, hades and all earthly powers. His resurrection was the most notable triumph and achievement in the annals of the Scriptures; no doubt heaven adorning itself in its gayest garbs and apparel and watching the conflict as waged in the grave. Perhaps the heavenly host sent up vociferous shouts that shook the celestial regions from center to circumference when the Lamb of God demonstrated His divinity and supernatural powers on that memorable occasion. This day, made momentous, sacred and holy by the resurrection of the great Atoner and Propitator, is called Easter Sunday in Christendom and is a rala religious day. Upon Christ's resurrection hinges all our faith; for if he did not rise from the dead, then "we are of all men most miserable." This is the greatest accomplishment, achievement and act of Christ's career and by His resurrection the plan of man's redemption was made full and complete in a startling, yet convincing manner; the gap between God and man, occasioned by the Adamic fall. Easter should not be celebrated with style shows, meaningless ceremonies and formalities, but with lowly, contrite worship, giving due consideration and recognition to what the day really signifies and typifies to the human family. ```markdown ``` TELEPHONE: NEW SUBSCRIPTION RATES: IMPORTANT1 Curtis, money orders, etc. payable to Houston Informer, 410 Hilam Street. SOME ENCOURAGING LOCAL SIGNS SOME ENCOURAGING LOCAL SIGNS The Informer is both gratified and elated with the trend of events in Houston—the bright civic outlook, wonderful commercial expansion and business activity—but especially is this paper's focus on the local church. The Informer people are playing in this civic growth and economic progress. Last week's issue of The Informer carried two news items of more than passing notice to our group and city, viz: the erection of a $24,500 three-story brick building in the Fifth Ward by opening the door to the local church; by opening its beautiful and luxurious new home, consisting of five thousand square feet of floor space on the third floor of the building located at corner of Milam Street and Prairie Avenue. On the heels of these two deals comes the announcement that the three-story color have paid off all outstanding claims on their two lots, which cost $85,000—and that a five-story structure, cost around $200,000, will be erected as soon as the architect completes drawing the plans and the contract is awarded. Just a few months ago Smith's Cafe moved into larger and more commercial space, and the architect entered its palatial and handsome new home during this year. The Hammond Undertaking Company, a new mortician establishment, opened its doors in the Masonic Hall, Fifth Ward, last month. A big colored oil corporation, headed by Henry L. Mims, is also a 1923 Houston venture. A colored woman, Mrs. J. C. Pinkerton, has recently wired wide the doors of an up-to-date women's ready-to-wear empire in the Fifth Ward. The local church congregations plan to build new houses of worship during 1923 and this year promises to be a piece-letter and history-maker among colored Houstonians. These business transactions and commercial undertakings are very encouraging signs and augur much for the future of the coloration in this community and section. Not to be overstretched is to fraternize Colored Commercial Club, which seems to be "hitting on all six," having recently opened and fitted up a suite of rooms in the U. B. F. building as downtown headquarters. This organization has already accomplished more in uniting the business and professional colored men of Houston and mobilizing resources than any similar movement ever launched here by our team. If the Colored Commercial Club functions as its leaders and members anticipate (and from present indications its future seems assured), we shall soon have some healthy commercial and business institutions among us here. While not despising the day of small things, we must make our audience aware of our plans, therefore, we should not only aim high but determine that our shots shall not miss the target or goal. The colored race in Houston possesses more wealth in the aggregate and as much, if not more, brain power, collectively, than that of our group in any other city in Texas and most Southern cities, which has profited us much. We have been contented with the crumbs that fell from the tables of others, our business and commercial plight today is due largely to this lethargy, indifference, mistrust, suspicion, lack of initiative or whatever one desires to term it. Whatever the term applied, the effect is the same, and our economic status (also true of our political and social condition) will only be altered as we put over big programs and collectively, in the commercial and business world. Answering an editorial query appearing in these columns during the 1920s will be useful to us *from* *Us*? from this angle it begins to appear that the 1923 will be "go-get-it-and bring-it-here" year among Houston colored citizens. Houston is going forward by leaps and bounds—concrete signs of progress, and all sides; and as an integral part of this cosmopolitan and metropolitan position and civilization we can not and must not to do our part. Richardson, Editor Houston Informer, Houston Texas. Dear Sir: This comes to congratulate you on the editorial that appeared in your paper a few weeks ago on the Sunday funeral. I am one pastor in the city who desires to publicly stamp my approval on what you have said. I do not feel that any good results can be had from the celebrations of the death of our loved ones in the manner they are staged, either intellectually, physically or spiritually. I am not opposed to a funeral on Sunday but I am opposed to a Sunday funeral. A funeral on Sunday, purposefully, saved from three to ten days, to take the advantage of the Lord's day—the day that He has hallowed for Himself and man's rest—to stage a three hour's program, of times with participants, ministers and others who do not even know the deceased persons just for the sake of a big show, of times with music and vain saying. Inside cretary that of times shakes the confidence of the ministry and Christianity, with the world. Why not let the life and usefulness of men and women in the community be taken for granted? He has been duly notified of their passing, by the drawing card as to the bigness of their families, and the treatment of some fraternal organization; notwithstanding these organizations, we value our people to our value. But for their make we oftimes rob persons of the only respect they deserve. In the next six days. This is a duty all men own their Creator. E. L. HARISON, Pastor Ann Archibald Church, Houston, Texas.
