GOREE EXPLAINS HIS POSITION IN ODD FELLOWS CONTROVERSY Houston will be host to two grand logues during the next six weeks: ) United Brothers of Friendship and Odd Fellows and Household of Ruth the following week, August 27. ) Both of these grand sessions will be held in an annual session here, July 27, 31, and the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows and Household of Ruth the following week, August 27. ) Both of these grand sessions will be called upon to serve in the entertaining role as never before. This will be the first time the U. B. P's have met in Houston in the past. ) To many of you to yet many of the order it will be like a home-coming, for it is here that the order (the first colored fraternity in Texas to purchase an office building) owns and operates two houses from the City Hall. Houston has another distinct U. B. P's in Houston that is the largest aggregate membership in the order of any city in the Texas city's leading business and professional men and women; same being true among the Odd Fellows and As for the Odd Fellows and Ruthies, their forth coming Houston sessions will be a jubilee, for it will mark the first grand session held in the imposing city which cost around $650,000, including lots, building, equipment and furnishings. All local committees of both orders are working out all details for the entertainment features, programs and events expected—that all attendance records will be broken at both of them. Though possessing the largest colorful population in the state and the country, Houston is home to the Texas fraternities. Houston has not entertained as many grand lodge members as the other denominations as some of the smaller cities of the Lone Star state, but the city's fraternities visit the visitors and residents, we are hoping that colored Houston will no longer be the entertainment program when same conventions occur. HARLEM HOSPITAL NOW OPEN TO COLORED DOCTORS AND INTERNES; EARNEST FIGHT NETTED RESULTS New York.—On Tuesday Harlem Hospital opened its doors to Negro physicians and internes. This action was taken at a conference between the Harlem Medical Board and a committee of prominent Negro citizens of Harlem, representing the newly formed Citizens' Welfare Council. The fight for physicians in Harlem Hospital began in earnest a few weeks ago when this committee met the mayor of New York City and placed the matter squarely before him. He expressed himself as in entire sympathy and asked the mayor of the city to appoint Dr. McGrath, president of the board of trustees of Bellevue and allied hospitals and work out a plan for opening the hospital to Negro physicians. CHURCHES PLAN FIGHT AGAINST LYNCHING EVIL (Preston News Service) Washington, D. C.-Party years ago we used to lynch men at the rate of 172.8 a year, here in America. Last year we lynched only 18. The Federal Council of churches hopes to make a change. Since 1888, when the fight was started against this "strictly American crime," the smallest number of lynchings in the number of lynchings. Sixteen lynchings took place in the United States last year, the smallest number of annual statistics on the crime was begun 40 years ago, and was shown in the annual reports of commission on race relations of the Federal Council of churches. The reopening of Tunkuisee institutes, Alabama, showed that 12 of the victims were Negroes. In the impasse ending with last year 587 lynchings were recorded as compared with 700 for the previous year. In the forward decrease in the crime which has progressed steadily through every decade the number of lynchings 40 year period the figures for last year, it was showed, was lower than the last year, with the lead for the period shown to be 36.4. Negro victims numbered 2,146 while white victims numbered 1,900. Working with other organizations in a campaign to make 3928 a "lynchman," in order to protect their prisoners in these 45 preventions, sheriffs and police sometimes even opened fire on their friends and neighbors. Nashville, Teen—Mrs. May McLeod Bathuna, presiding in the National Pederation of Colored Women Clubs, thrilled a large audience in the Bibou theater of this city. She stressed the new program for the development of club work among the women of the race and emphasized the part which the young women must of necessity play in promoting the program. In setting forth the various features of the program she urged racial integrity and sensitivity, thrift and cooperative effort. In their presentation of the new pro- gram of Nashville were eloquent. Just why Dallas Express should attack and accuse me of taking part in this action is in the light of the fact that the newspaper is hard to understand, in view of the fact that the magazine editor was sitting on the platform in Houston in the Odd Fellow Temple when Mr. Riddle reported that the Odd Fellows had assets of $355,086.74. In the presence of the managing editor of the Dallas Express, Mr. Riddle stated: "I have been repeatedly asked for information regarding the affairs of the Odd Fellows as they pertain to my office, and I have had everyone to understand that I do not turn loose any information to anyone until I am through with it and ready to give it to the public." Congress of the National Baptist Convention, Incorporated, which held its meetings here June 24-28. Five thousand five hundred delegates enrolled the first day and the spacious City. Forum, seating 20,000 people, was a beautiful sight on the opening night when the citizens, white and colored, turned out en masse to welcome the congress. Rev. S. H. Hamon, D. D., was reelected president as were the other members of the official family, including Prof. H. T. Sims, secretary; Rev. H. K. Hill, corresponding secretary; Rev. S. B. Butler, treasurer; Miss Lucile E. Campbell, pianist; Prof. E. W. D. Isaac, Jr., song director, and E. C. Thomas, of New Orleans as president of the B. Y. P. U. department. The musical program of the congress was much commendation. The big mixed chorus of 200 voices led by E. W. D. Isaac, Jr., assisted by Jas. E. Gale of New Orleans and E. M. Barns of Wichita, made a decided hit as did the congress male chorus directed by Jas. E. Gale. Prof. R. B. We have put forth efforts and brought about accomplishments such as to justify us in feeling proud and thankful. The fact is we have put up a building which cost us in the neighborhood of $350,000. We have paid spot cash for this and still we have left on hand a cash balance that compares favorably with the best institutions of our kind in the state; even though such other institutions have undergone no such financial strain as have the Odd Fellows. It is a matter of deep regret to me that following upon the heels of our strenuous efforts and final glorious success, that instead of receiving Prof. W. E. To my mind this is base ingratitude on the part of those taking a part in such abuse and attacks. To my mind the proper thing to do under the circumstances is to meet at Houston and rejoice and be exceedingly glad for the wonderful accomplishments of our Order during the past year. To get up a big wrangle, stir up strife and create general discussion would be entirely out of order, and I want to say to the public that we are depending upon your sense of justice and fair play to withhold harsh judgment upon our administration until you are quite sure such judgment is justified. The church should be constant in their service to the sending forth of laborers into the vineyard. The Spirit called and the church from the church to Antioch. These men seem to have been ready to go for they rendered instant obedience to the Lord's work, holding ourselves in readiness for the immediate execution of His commission. The real call are not taken, by surprise when the church sets them forward to their specific work. The Word of God in Cyprus (p. 4-5). We are not told as to why they first went to Cyprus, but we are left to infer that it was owing to the fact that it was acquainted with the country and people, and could thus be assured of a respectable hearing among them. Ewing, District Grand Secretary, who secured such rates and who has issued a statement clearly defining and setting forth the requirements that will obtain and the basis of fares, dates that tickets will be issued, and the conditions under which the Grand Lodge provided for the comfort and convenience of all persons attending the Grand Lodge and Grand Household by the Railway Companies and due publication giving dates of and time of departure of trains leaving for Houston from different sections of the state. Special chair cars from Texarkana, Denison, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Austin, San Antonio, Waco and Beaumont will be provided for and other points if the number of delegates warrants. Delegates will go to the Grand Lodge and Grand Household prepared to stay in Houston for the duration of the trip and the rate of $2.00 per day. The grand opening will take place Monday evening, August 3rd, and all Grand Lodge Officers and Delegates will be expected to leave their homes in time to be present at the opening. As Grand Master, may I urge that every Lodge and Household, the Patriarchie, Juvenile Society, Past Grand Masters Council and Ladies' Chamber, have as many representatives present as permissible. Houston will be the mecca for the great host of Odd Fellows and Ruths of Texas in August. The magnificent Temple now completed and equipped will be the home of the Grand Lodge and Grand Household will be held. This beautiful building with its modern conveniences is the very last word in modern architecture and construction. The Delegates and visitors will enter their new home for the first time with a sense of pride and satisfaction that is not easily described. Enwrapped in this magnificent Temple is a mute testimony of the loyalty of the members of the Grand Lodge and surrounded by a Cabinet of capable, earnest and unselfish men, have been able to carry out according to the wishes of all. My path and those associated with me has not been strenued with roses—we have had many difficult problems to solve and seeming unmountable obstacles to overcome, but with modest pride and an abiding faith in God we are proud to acknowledge that our task has been finished, victory achieved and there is nothing further to be imparted and enduring gratitude to one and all for the sublime spirit manifested. This should be a year for rejoicing and thanks to Almighty God for the successes and accomplishments of Odd Fellows and Ruths. May I urge as Grand Master that all Delegates come to the Grand Lodge and Grand Household of Ruth imbued with a spirit of co-operation and good will that the great accomplishments thus far had will be an incentive to even do greater things in the future and more determined than ever that there be no steps backward by the Grand Old Order. According to news items in the daily newspapers of Houston, the board of education of the Houston Independent School District has awarded the contract for the erection of a high school for colored children in "deep" Third Ward, to cost (the building) around $70,000; notwithstanding the fact that the site on which to erect this "wonderful" school structure has not yet been secured. The board is certainly manifesting a parsimonious and niggrary policy and executing a shortsighted and discriminatory program in reference to its coerced citizens and constituents, while our people are sitting around like a bunch of "dumb Doras" and evincing nothing more or less than a passive interest in a cause that vitally and directly affects them, their posteriority and the social family. "The informer could cite several of the smaller cities and large towns in Texas which have spent more than $100,000 for buildings for colored children, and all of these buildings are not employed for colored high schools, either!" Just to think that Houston, with a colored population probably in excess of 50,000 (all of whom are tax-payers, either of the direct or indirect type), will not spend a sufficient amount of the tax-payers' money to erect a decent and respectable high school building for its colored children; notwithstanding the fact that, save one or two stucco structures, no buildings have been built for colored children. Roberson, Baptist city mislocation, was called to Galveston by his brother Monroe Roberson, of his brother Monroe Roberson, of Memphis, Tenn., who spent several days in the city, the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Roberson, and left last Monday for Los Angeles, Cal. Any amount less than $50,000 out of this $3,000,000 for purchasing sites and erecting building for colored schools, is a crying name, a travesty upon justice and a criminal outrage upon fair play and a square deal! As stated repeatedly in these columns for the last several years, Houston is a poor last among the cities of Texas (and towns, too) when it comes to providing school sites, buildings and facilities for students. Houston is a city that is doing much to create and maintain a spirit of unrest, discontent and dissatisfaction among the forward-thinking, tax-paying colored citizens of this municipality and school district. At 7:30 we were back on the job; Miss Linnie L. Lincoln read a paper and Mrs. A. Johnson sang a solo. Friday night, July 10, all superintendants and Sunday School workers are invited to be with us and hear some of the great methods that were taught at the congress. Supt.
