GOREE EXPLAINS HIS POSITION IN ODD FELLOWS CONTROVERSY Houston will be host to two grand logues during the next six weeks: ) United Brothers of Friendship and Odd Fellows and Household of Ruth the following week, August 27. ) Both of these grand sessions will be held in an annual session here, July 27, 31, and the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows and Household of Ruth the following week, August 27. ) Both of these grand sessions will be called upon to serve in the entertaining role as never before. This will be the first time the U. B. P's have met in Houston in the past. ) To many of you to yet many of the order it will be like a home-coming, for it is here that the order (the first colored fraternity in Texas to purchase an office building) owns and operates two houses from the City Hall. Houston has another distinct U. B. P's in Houston that is the largest aggregate membership in the order of any city in the Texas city's leading business and professional men and women; same being true among the Odd Fellows and As for the Odd Fellows and Ruthies, their forth coming Houston sessions will be a jubilee, for it will mark the first grand session held in the imposing city which cost around $650,000, including lots, building, equipment and furnishings. All local committees of both orders are working out all details for the entertainment features, programs and events expected—that all attendance records will be broken at both of them. Though possessing the largest colorful population in the state and the country, Houston is home to the Texas fraternities. Houston has not entertained as many grand lodge members as the other denominations as some of the smaller cities of the Lone Star state, but the city's fraternities visit the visitors and residents, we are hoping that colored Houston will no longer be the entertainment program when same conventions occur. HARLEM HOSPITAL NOW OPEN TO COLORED DOCTORS AND INTERNES; EARNEST FIGHT NETTED RESULTS New York.—On Tuesday Harlem Hospital opened its doors to Negro physicians and internes. This action was taken at a conference between the Harlem Medical Board and a committee of prominent Negro citizens of Harlem, representing the newly formed Citizens' Welfare Council. The fight for physicians in Harlem Hospital began in earnest a few weeks ago when this committee met the mayor of New York City and placed the matter squarely before him. He expressed himself as in entire sympathy and asked the mayor of the city to appoint Dr. McGrath, president of the board of trustees of Bellevue and allied hospitals and work out a plan for opening the hospital to Negro physicians. CHURCHES PLAN FIGHT AGAINST LYNCHING EVIL (Preston News Service) Washington, D. C.-Party years ago we used to lynch men at the rate of 172.8 a year, here in America. Last year we lynched only 18. The Federal Council of churches hopes to make a change. Since 1888, when the fight was started against this "strictly American crime," the smallest number of lynchings in the number of lynchings. Sixteen lynchings took place in the United States last year, the smallest number of annual statistics on the crime was begun 40 years ago, and was shown in the annual reports of commission on race relations of the Federal Council of churches. The reopening of Tunkuisee institutes, Alabama, showed that 12 of the victims were Negroes. In the impasse ending with last year 587 lynchings were recorded as compared with 700 for the previous year. In the forward decrease in the crime which has progressed steadily through every decade the number of lynchings 40 year period the figures for last year, it was showed, was lower than the last year, with the lead for the period shown to be 36.4. Negro victims numbered 2,146 while white victims numbered 1,900. Working with other organizations in a campaign to make 3928 a "lynchman," in order to protect their prisoners in these 45 preventions, sheriffs and police sometimes even opened fire on their friends and neighbors. The Gifts of the Church at Antioch (v. 1). Young as Antioch, the new religious center was, she had prophets and teachers. This is the kind of feeding that meets the needs of the people they were directed to send forth those whom the Spirit called, we learn that the real call to Christ's service comes from the church and the church seconded the motion by sending those who were called by Him. The church should be constant in their service to the sending forth of laborers into the vineyard. The Spirit called and the church from the church to Antioch. These men seem to have been ready to go for they rendered instant obedience to the Lord's work, holding ourselves in readiness for the immediate execution of His commission. The real call are not taken, by surprise when the church sets them forward to their specific work. The Word of God in Cyprus (p. 4-5). We are not told as to why they first went to Cyprus, but we are left to infer that it was owing to the fact that it was acquainted with the country and people, and could thus be assured of a respectable hearing among them. Be sure to note that he had heard the good news to go with it first to their kindred and friends. B. Bolden, 2116 Live Oak who has been on the sick list for about ten days, is much improved. According to news items in the daily newspapers of Houston, the board of education of the Houston Independent School District has awarded the contract for the erection of a high school for colored children in "deep" Third Ward, to cost (the building) around $70,000; notwithstanding the fact that the site on which to erect this "wonderful" school structure has not yet been secured. The board is certainly manifesting a parsimonious and niggrary policy and executing a shortsighted and discriminatory program in reference to its coerced citizens and constituents, while our people are sitting around like a bunch of "dumb Doras" and evincing nothing more or less than a passive interest in a cause that vitally and directly affects them, their posteriority and the social family. "The informer could cite several of the smaller cities and large towns in Texas which have spent more than $100,000 for buildings for colored children, and all of these buildings are not employed for colored high schools, either!" Just to think that Houston, with a colored population probably in excess of 50,000 (all of whom are tax-payers, either of the direct or indirect type), will not spend a sufficient amount of the tax-payers' money to erect a decent and respectable high school building for its colored children; notwithstanding the fact that, save one or two stucco structures, no buildings have been built for colored children. The fact is that the majority of the buildings now used by colored children are inadequate and wholly unfit for modern school purposes. Mr. and Mrs. J. Williams, 3819 Broadway, Mt. Roberson, Baptist city mislocation, was called to Galveston by his brother Monroe Roberson, of his brother Monroe Roberson, of Memphis, Tenn., who spent several days in the city, the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Roberson, and left last Monday for Los Angeles, Cal. Any amount less than $50,000 out of this $3,000,000 for purchasing sites and erecting building for colored schools, is a crying name, a travesty upon justice and a criminal outrage upon fair play and a square deal! As stated repeatedly in these columns for the last several years, Houston is a poor last among the cities of Texas (and towns, too) when it comes to providing school sites, buildings and facilities for students. Houston is a city that is doing much to create and maintain a spirit of unrest, discontent and dissatisfaction among the forward-thinking, tax-paying colored citizens of this municipality and school district. Though constituting practically 25% of the urban population, the colored citizens of Houston will hardly receive 1/30th of the $3,000,000 bond issue; and yet there are some among both races, here and there in the South, who are brazen and bold enough to resist the pressure of enforcement between the white and colored children when it comes to spending public money for their weal, welfare, advancement and training. What are the colored citizens of Houston and patrons of the sheds going to do about this matter? Rev, and Mrs. G. Porter, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Harvey J. Edwards, have returned from an overseeing trip to Orleans and other Leuven cities w the new colored high school in "deep" Third Ward? How many colored parent-teacher associations have we in institution, and what have these organizations done or said respect is this school site, type and cost of the building? Mrs. M. D.
